What are the best add ons to use and which should be avoided? I know Questhelper is quite popular.

I think this is one of those things that depend purely on personal tastes. There is a huge array of addons available. Best idea is to download and install two or three that appeal to you and try them out. If you don't like those, have another look and see if something else is more what you had in mind. Most of the reliable addon sites divide them by what sort of help they offer, so it's easy to look for what you want to try. A lot of what you decide to stick with will depend on just how much help you want. I know people in my guild that have more than a hundred addons, things that offer help with the tiniest bits of the game. Others prefer to do it on their own and see addons as a sort of nanny that doesn't let you develop your character. So it's really up to you.

Thanks I will try that. I don't want to bog down my system with too many at one time.

That's the best way to do it. Think about how you play the game and what you believe you'd like some help with. Then try a couple and dump them if you don't like what an addon does. Time-consuming, yes, but in the end you have a game that is the way you want it to play.

Add-ons are there to address shortcomings in the current UI. Until you've played awhile and can say "I wish the UI would do [insert issue here]", there really isn't any reason to have add-ons. Now, some guilds will require/strongly recommend use of certain add-ons for raiding, but I tend to turn those off for any character who isn't raiding.

For general questing I've come to appreciate the addon "Pawn". It adds a number to the tooltip you see when hovering over an item that indicates how good the item is for you personally. It does this by taking the items attributes (like, armor, intellect, strength,...), modify them according to a scale and add them up.
The personal-aspect comes from the fact that you can to input these scales yourself.
Example:
- Intellect for a warrior is worthless --> you would rate this 0
- Strength for a warrior is very good --> you would rate this very high
- Is a weapon with 20dps + 4 spirit better than a weapon with 21dps? If you don't use spirit then the answer is no.
You don't have to figure this out by yourself though. There are plenty of scales available on the Pawn-forums and on other sites (google it).
In the end the number you get helps you decide which item would benefit you more. A choice you will undoubtably have to make a LOT !
