Hi,
I'm a level 33 blood elf rogue, and I'm convinced I'm not dealing as much damage as i should be, and i can't work out why.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Khadgar&n=Cilva

my b/f plays a b-elf hunter and we pretty much only play together, doing all the same quests etc. these two charachters have rarely been apart since we rolled them at the same time. I feel that I should be doing heaps more damage than him, or at least equal. As you can see, he has nearly double what i have.
Also, we just started pvp-ing at arathi basin, and i always come in around the bottom of the list. Here are the stats that i thought would be useful.

My stats:

largest hit dealt: 515
total kills: 4568
total killing blows: 1702
kills granting xp or honor: 3302
Total damage done: 1306180
Total damage received: 375163

Hunter's stats:

largest hit dealt: 335
total kills: 4895
total killing blows: 3048 (because he arches them when they run)
kills granting xp or honor: 3363
Total damage done: 2150459
Total damage received: 308550

if anyone has ANY ideas or info, i would be most grateful.

He has a hunter.

He can start nuking before you're even in range. He has a pet he can send on them.

You're level 33, which means anyone will spot you from a mile away in BGs. If they do with rogues, said rogues are dead meat. If they do with Hunters, they still gotta close in while the hunter is plinking away.

I have a hunter and a rogue I pvp with - the hunter has roughly double the amount of kills than my rogue and I played them from about the same time. The rogue has to be closer and deals more damage from stealth while the hunter is pew pewing away and pet is munching away like its tea time.

Edit: What Aerath said :)

Melee and ranged grouping always have the issue of the ranged nuking the crap out of it while the melee only gets to take a swing at it if it lives long enough to get close.

Warriors have this problem in a lesser extent since they have Charge, but then Charging recklessly into a grp has never been the best of ideas as well.

The solution with the least amount of friction is to have 2 melee or 2 ranged (with one of them a pet class to hold a bit of aggro).

Try and do an instance and see what happens when the hunter needs to hold back a bit more and mobs last longer in melee.

Hi,

largest hit dealt: 515

largest hit dealt: 335

Where is he doing more damage than you are ? You hit way harder.

The problem is that he is a ranged DD, but that has allready been explained.

You need to learn to look at the proper stats :)

The real issue you seem to be having is DPS time, not so much raw DPS, as the others have said. One of the constant struggles you're going to have with rogues and PvE when playing with ranged is that if the mob's running around, it's far less of a problem for them than it is for you. As long as they're somewhere within that magic 30-yard radius, they can do something -- not to mention that pets can change direction and follow bosses around faster than you can. Having to stay in melee range is simply harder.

For example, in Ulduar, there's a boss named Ignis who tends to get moved around a lot due to the mechanics of the fight. If I look at my stats for the fight, my DPS is a bit lower than usual, but so is my DPS time because it seems like I'm spending half the fight just running after him and trying to close into melee range. This is a usual problem for bosses that move, or have to be kited, or encounters with a lot of mobs scattered around where I need to go from place to place or change targets a lot.

It's just part of being a melee DPSer vs. being a ranged one. Having played both (my old main was a warlock), I can tell you that it's much more challenging with a rogue. Get used to it.

Thanks guys, that makes me feel a bit better, and I've got my damage up a little. seemed to be:
using a sword/dagger instead of dagger/dagger,
equipment upgrades,
talent tree.
plus of course playing with a hunter.

thanks for all your help.
