Hi, as you can see I am a noob here. I have been playing the trial version and was wondering which version I should buy. Is there a commercial version that has all the latest updates? Or do I have to but the game and then buy the addons.. (even though it will be some time before i get characters to level 60) ?
On a side note I find that the players are not very helpful here if you ask a noob question in chat (I dont mean in the forum)... is there a chat ingame with helpers around? (admittedly I am answering many of my questions by myself..but I feel I may be missing a lot as well. Also they dont let trail accounts do much. I cannot whisper unless someone invites me to a group or adds me as friend).
Side side note  why do higher levels keep dropping that darn duel flag on a weak little level 8 rogue... ..I have my hands full just keeping those pesky mologs(or whatever) off my ass
Also yesterday I was invited by this person who helped clear out molog camp (i got the scales for quest this way)..Then the person ran off..I said thanks for the help..no answer... i said something else and chat was locked..I promptly left the group.... (and whats with that rolling animation thing?? i got this special sword but said i had to wait while rolling).
Sorry if I am rambling a bit..so many questions..not enough time to read all forums (cuts into gameplay...).
Edit: Thank god for this forum.. the official forum is sooo anal.. they let me register..but wont let a trail account post..... Darn money grabbing corporations :p

there are three 'games' in play here
-'vanilla' WoW (the original content)
-The Burning Crusade (first expansion)
-Wrath of the lich king (the most recent expansion)
what you want first is the Battle Chest which includes vanilla+TBC. should be around 30 USD.
You cannot take advantage of anything in Wrath of the Lich king content until you hit 55 (to create a Death Knight) or 68 (to go to Northrend). Wait UNTIL then to buy WOTLK becuase you don't know if you will last that long, and also the price may come down.

Don't let the nasties spoil your play. And by 'nasties' I mean all too many of those playing the game. There are good kind helpful folk playing too. A little persistence in chat (and putting the nasties on 'ignore') will bring results. Duelling is a bizarre taste that baffles me. I ignore them too, since most seem to spend all their ingame time on this pointless activity. I found an addon called 'stop duel' or something like that and it's marvelous - refuses a duel invite as soon as it's uttered. Be assertive, remember that what you are playing is your game and you have the right to play it any way you wish so long as it's within the TOS and forget about the ones who try to rain on your parade. After a while you'll make some friends, people with whom you'll enjoy grouping and who will be helpful. Add them to your 'friends' list, consider joining a guild (don't be afraid to try a couple out before you find one that shares your ideas of gameplay and is truly friendly) and things will get a lot better.

and whats with that rolling animation thing??
The roll thing is when a rare item drops, all party members get to Need or Greed on it. You click Need if the item would really benefit your character, so you must make sure you can use the item and it is better than what you currently have. If you don't really need it, then click Greed.
A Need roll overwrites a Greed roll, so if one of you clicks Need, that person will automatically get the item. If you both click the same option, WoW randomly decides who gets it. It's worth rolling Greed on items you don't really need because they can sell well in the Auction House.

Thanks for the replies.. I have played a couple of the free mmorp games out there like RL and Auteria (amazing how much content they have which is an obvious copy of WOW). So I am pretty well up to speed on guilds (I was in guild leadership in EL for over a year before I got sick of the bickering etc. In those you put up with the rubbish because you get it for nothing anyway.
I see the point about lich king expansion..reason i said it is that the trial I am on at moment is in that expansion... so if I buy the vanilla WOW will i still be able to play the character that i have just taken to level 11? or will i need to start new character.
I am in Australia so I log into US realms... I noticed the other day the realm I was in was down for extended time after a server wide maintainance..so a started a diff character in another realm... do you guys play across diff realms? And is multi playing and swapping stuff between characters in same realm allowed?
As for the roll thing... it happened once when we were fighting together..i think i missed out on that item.. but second was after the guy ran off..i killed a molock? and got the roll thing again..i waited till the yellow time bar ran out then just collected it....I realised the other guy got half the loot..so i left the little group...... When playing a trial account you are forced to be solo..as you cant even join a channel except general chat. I cant sell or buy anything. And I cannot whisper to players (except the guy who joined me into his 1 man group ).
Well thanks again... and I may see you out there...

Swapping stuff between characters is indeed allowed. By multiplaying, do you mean having several different characters on different realms? That's fine too.

It was a Murloc, one of WoW's loveable little creatures  We even have one as our site logo.
The restrictions on trial accounts are to stop people quickly making 'disposable' and untraceable accounts to perform illegal actions, such as selling gold, spamming power-levellling services, whispering players with gold offers, that kind of thing. This all still happens, but I imagine the problem is a lot better than it would be otherwise.

1. You'll be just fine with your new toon on vanilla wow only. There's something about making certain you upgrade your trial account, instead of buying a new account that you need to be certain you do from account management page on main website..
2. Most of my toons are living on Runetotem US. I have a couple of neglected alts for those times when RT is down, and I don't feel like laundry, writing, etc. You can swap items between characters as long as they are on the same server/faction. Ie- My main is a horde shaman. My alt is a horde death knight. They switch stuff and gold between them all the time. My son's main is a horde druid, also on Runetotem. We mail stuff all the time. My alliance alt and alliance husband mail stuff. But I can't outright mail stuff from my horde main to my alliance alt. That requires help from my best friend, also runetotem based.

You will need the Burning Crusade expansion if you made a Blood Elf or Draenai (and you might need it to level up jewelcrafting unless they changed that.) Those races aren't availble in Vanilla wow, and so if you made them on the trial they won't be playable without the BC expansion.
Other than that, you really won't see much difference in the game without the expansions until level 55 (at a minimum.)
Still, it makes sense to buy the Battle Chest (with Vanilla and BC) simply because it costs about the same as buying one of them separately.

One thing I hate about the trial version is that i cannot talk except in general chat.. people keep requesting i join their guild...but I cannot even whisper back to them that I am on a trail and will wait till I buy full version before I consider guilds...makes me feel rude just hitting the decline button.
Regarding the post about upgrading from the trial to full version so I dont lose the character... I am using the online version..I want to buy the game from a store and do a full install so I dont have any loading issues.
Also I noticed i was freezing and getting server dropouts last night (aussie time) but mostly it is fine...I am in the dawnbringer? realm. A good point/bad point about being in Aus is that I am often on when U.S is asleep...the dropouts were occurring early morning my time which is close to peak U.S time.
It seemed that i was freezing and getting disconnect when I did certain actions (like clicking a mixing window ..or maybe moving from one map area to another). And while often i was just booted to the server disconnect window other times I actually had to alt/del to get unfrozen.

Histo when you get your box from the store, you will just need to log into to your account from worldofwarcraft.com, there will be an option to upgrade, and you type in the CD-key that came with your box. That upgrades your account and you keep your characters.

Now to pay for my subscription...big question.... buy 6 months now while USD is at 0.81 AUD ..or wait and hope USD keeps going up.. (couple of months ago it was below 0.61 AUD but I dont think it will hit 0.95 like before the market crash for some time yet..if ever)
Thank goodness I just got a new job with a pay rise :azn:

In regards to servers, I believe there are Oceanic servers aren't there? But I think they're based in the US anyway.
