Sorry I am a noob just tried WOW yesterday and I am a healer/priest, I have a mace but I want a really good sword to smite my enemies as well, using magic gets boring, can I use a sword, sometimes I try buying a weapon and it won't let me do it.

From WoWWiki:
He begins with proficiency in one-handed maces and wands and can learn to use daggers and staves from weapon masters.

In other words....no.

Priests are not armored and equipped to go up there and beat things with weapons. They carry them as "stat sticks" items which pretty much only exist to add stats to their character. From what I just read, my friend, you may be a pally in the wrong clothes.

Paladins have big swords. They smite their enemies both with big swords and spells. Priests are the dress wearing, mace carrying, shield encased guys massively casting spells.

I agree, a Paladin would be a much better choice for you be the sounds of it :)

im sorry but priests cannot use swords.

Priests are restricted to...

Cloth Armor
1 handed Maces
Daggers
Staffs
Wands

... i know it sucks but we only use weapons for stat boosts not for damage.

However, there's nothing more satisfying than finishing off a runner with a good whack from a staff. I enjoy this immensely

whats also funny is when your in a boss thats got about 2% HP left and you (a priest) runs in to melee it and get the killing blow with your epic staff skills :D

Cheers folks, I shall create a Paladin character, sounds much more like me, what is the horde equivalent called?

Horde equivalent is also a paladin, but you need to have The Burning Crusade expansion to be able to roll it. Thats because the only horde race that can be paladins are Blood Elves and those are exclusive to TBC.

For priests (and other cloth wearers), weapons are primarily what players call a "stat stick". It's something you have equipped to give boosts to your various statistics, such as intellect, spirit, spell power, etc., but not something you actually "use" (Maticus's love for giving them a love tap on the back as they're retreating notwithstanding). After level 6, when you can get a wand, you stop whacking things, and you stop using the wand pretty quickly too.

Like others said, if you want an armored healer that uses weapons, roll a paladin, or perhaps a shaman (though shamans can't use swords -- but they use axes and maces quite effectively, among other things).

Technically our paladins are called Blood Knights. But yeah, no one really goes there. We just call them blood elf targets of opportunity... oh...wait...sorry about that. (Channelling Alliance faction retadin in pvp server, who goes out of his way to gank belf paladins)

This one would be my son, who still, to this day, goes out of his way to gank belf pallies. :/ Dweeb.

But you all are currently safe from his predations...he's now on the pvp server known as Iraq.

I stuck witht the priest, level 15 now and enjoy using my magic spells, my staff skills have got much better and I get enjoyment out of finishing off monsters with it.

Gank? Belf? What is this slang you use lol.

I don't often see that many priests about so that's good as I can heal warriors etc as they fight with me.

Gonna have to limit the time I spend on this game as its a bit addictive. Not sure how much its gonna cost me if I do sign up. Is there a monthly charge or what?

Belf is a Blood Elf
Gank is a term used when someone who is significantly more powerful then you (read: Level 80 in top notch equipment) comes barreling out of nowhere and proceeds to one shot you. This really only happens on PvP servers as after a certain point, you are always flagged for PvP. And people WILL come up and kill you just because.

Yes, there is a monthly charge. $15 (US) per month. Check the community site for more info. I don't know the European prices. It's something similar though.
