I know a few members of the forum got into City of Heros. Can someone tell me whats goin on with that game? Looks good, sounds good, tastes good, smokes good all good. Can't be better than Wow but I wanna an update.
well, i've been playing it, thus my recent absence from these boards. :)
but there is still an NDA, it won't be lifted until probably the 14th/15th.
the game is good though, a lot of fun. it's not like any other MMORPG i've played, it's actually fun. it's more action based, more simplistic in design and play. the design was really thought out well. the interface is really nice, good enough to be a Blizzard game. it's one of those games, like Blizzards, that you can just start playing and go from there. the character creation is really the best out there, nothing comes close. it's so fun making new Heroes that it could almost be a game in itself. this game is the first MMORPG i've liked, in fact, i love it. i'll be playing this until WoW comes out, would probably keep playing this even after. not even sure if i want into the WoW beta, i'd rather be playing CoH right now. i can't really compare it to any other game, it's got some stuff from other games, but it's really unique in it's own right.
even as a Beta, i give the game a 9/10. it's not perfect, but it's an amazingly good job for a first time developer. you just have to find the right character build for your style of play. i know i've already found mine. :)
Sounds good, I need something to bide my time I'm so tired of lineage 2 already, hopefully I will get into the open beta as well, although I dont really like the super hero theme I'm a mmo junkie so I'll try anything once.
I just got done reading the 24 page thread over at Penny Aracade about Coh and now I really want to play it. But it coming out in April is bad because of papers and finals and what not.
I don't understand it if the game is as good as everyone says why don't they remove the NDA? I want to see these awesome costumes, the powers, everything. I mean wow isn't out for another 6-9 months and yet we get pictures all the damn time.
Well, I don't post much so you probably don't consider me a "member of the forums" but I am also in the pre-order group of testers. Sorry, NDA prevents me from saying how cool it would be to be a superhero jumping across the rooftops thwarting an evil cult's attempt's to hold spooky ritual's which involve a sacrifice, and not of the lamb kind if you get my drift.
Mostly the game is fresh in its approach to the MMO market. It's fast paced, it has real strategy as in you feel like you are actually playing a game and not just watching your avatar fight. The variety of character's you can make, both power and costume wise, make it fun to team up with people of the same archetype as you, fire and ice gets the job done my friend. I will definately get this game, and since I got the pre-order I will be in 3 days early, desperately trying to get to the flying power level so I can show off in Atlas park on day 1 of retail :winner: . Anyway, the game is great and basically finished. A worthy game of my money and time until WoW comes out, and probably some during WoW since it feels more like a game I can play for 30 minutes and feel like I did something.
I don't get why you don't just tell us something juicy tulor I mean who here would report you? Like you said we don't know you so we whoudln't have a vested intrest in you getting kicked out of the beta. I don't get those NDA's why is everyone so afraid to talk about stuff.. I mean your on a blizzard game fourm what's the chances the owners of COH are gonna come by and see you talking stuff about them. Especially when all that stuff is good and the game comes out this month.
Then again I just like knowing something no one else does.
Well, I'll say this much. The game is built around quests mainly, much like WoW will be. You get various contacts that are generally associated with a level range, your first one being 1-5, the second two that I got were roughly 5-10. This of course makes for a frustrating time if you only do your quests since you will probably just be level 5 by the time you exhaust your first contact, leaving you in a world of pain if you attempt to solo your own instanced missions from your new contacts.
The solution to this is to join a group, and do group members quests as well. Sure the xp is split up in a group so you are getting less xp per enemy, but it scales the number of enemies up meaning that you gain xp much quicker if you tackle missions as a group instead of solo. The powers are awesome, you start the character creation by picking an origin (determines who your first contact is and who you fight most of the time) and an archetype. The archetypes are what you would consider classes in other games, and there are only 5 to choose from. However, playing a scrapper (meelee man) with primary focus in swords and secondary in regeneration is very different that someone who is playing a scrapper with primary power dark melee (think of evil magical fists of doom) and secondary power ice armor. Personally I like the blasters most of all, they would be considered the nukers of CoH but I don't like applying these stereotypes since the character isn't as fragile as a mage and has a good number of moves that help with his close range skill.
Making your character then moves to designing a costume, and you should spend some time on this since you will probably never see someone else that looks like you. Some things seem really popular, but the majority of players will look very different from eachother, making it fun to pick out friends from a distance etc. No capes in the game though, but I don't really like capes anyway.
Their is a little bit of tediousness in the game, mostly when you get a lame non-instanced mission like go kill 10 gang members. No one likes these quests since you really have no way of knowing where to look. Later you can head out to dangerous zones where big groups of baddies spawn making it much faster to get 10 kills, but when you are level 3 and running around Atlas Park you will have a hard time finding the right guys. Thankfully they said they are fixing this spawn issue and even when it was bad (my first day of play was the first day lots of pre-order beta invites went out and newbie zone was packed) I didn't spend more than 30 minutes to get the mission done and was quickly rewarded with a new mission to venture into the sewers and put a stop to a group of insane doctors intent on building an army of the living dead out of corpses they pilfered from the local morgue.
The fighting has so much action in it, I find it amazing. I'm constantly running and jumping to gain space and hide behind objects, throwing out a ball of lightning that hit's enemies in an area and doing damage over time. Triggering my inspirations (think potions) to beat boss creatures and saving very thankful citizens from zombification or the more standard mugging.
There's more I could say, but I'm going to go play now. The game is great, get it and during release I'll show people around. And thanks to the cool sidekick system a level 1 can go off and fight with his level 15 friend and be effective in the battle .
yeah I hear the sidekick system is great, its a really good idea too. That way you can truely be a mentor to a new bie. I don't know if you can answer this Tulor and if not thats fine but like are you stuck with your mentor as a sidekick?
Like if I'm a level 15 badass and want to help a newbie out can I make him my side kick for just a few mins or is he my sidekick forever?
If you can't answer that's fine I understand :) I really wish I could see some of the characters people have made (other than the screenshots cause you tend to only see like the same five charactes then)
