Warcraft Lore - Trolls are important, why do many consider them a minor/weak race?

Im a n00b here, thought id share my thoughts with other sad people who know all the lore and stuff like me ;-)

Trolls are one of the most powerfull races on the face of Azeroth, the Forest Trolls alone were the opposite and equal of the High elves, and fought two of the most important wars in warcraft history against them...

The Forest Trolls had an empire which was brought down by Elves and Humans, creating a blood feud, and was the cause of the Burning Legion's second invasion, because they were so powerfull the Elves had to teach the humans magic, and their old lands extend all through Lorderon with Quel'Thalas built on top of an old holy city of theirs, making the Forsaken their new blood enemys - in addition they allied with the first hoard, making them important, in an attempt to reclaim Lorderon...

The Ice Trolls had much power, even rivaling the Dwarves who took their land (another blood feud), and have a large presence in Northrend, making them rivals/possible undead targets of the Lich King himself, and probably rivals of the mighty Nerubian Empire...

The Jungle Trolls have massive civilisation and ruins extending from the islands like the Echo Isles, Broken Isles, South Isles and the south of Azeroth (stranglethron), making them perhaps the most powerfull even greater than the forest ones, and they have allied with the second hoard and Thrall, they are most widespread being through the ocean and both continents. Jungle Troll lands are being invaded by humans, dwarves and goblins, making for some interesting rivalry.

Dark Trolls are present just about everywhere too but are primative (or so people think) and live in caves.

Also there is rumers of 'Desert Trolls'.

Collectively, Trolls have one of the most interesting historys, are EVERYWHERE, are an ancient culture in Azeroth, are equal to the elves at least in power, but have feuds and interests everywhere, making good mission/story oppertunity, are more warlike even than Orcs, have cool accents, aztec style ruins, and practice voodoo mon! So how come they are statistically the least played race!!!!!!!!???????? (At least PvP) and how come some people think of them as some minor people like the Pandarans ^^

Dunno about anyone else but id like to have a Troll guild, and try fighting the invaders from historic Troll lands :-)

Comments? :-)

EDIT: Just thought id mention, Trolls have all these classes in WC3 (as much as a 'major' race):

Troll Head Hunter
Troll Beserker
Troll Witch Doctor
Troll Batrider (Trolls should probably have bats as in game mounts too)
Troll Shadow Priest
Troll Priest
Troll High Priest
Troll Trapper
Troll Warlord
Troll Shadow Hunter (hero)

I play a troll shaman on the pvp server :D

Yea I like trolls too, they rule :)

Oh and according to the first war they had with the elves, the trolls were stronger then elves, as the elves needed the humans help to compete against the trolls.

I think the reason not too many people play them is because they don't like there looks, although I love them myself :)

Yeh I think their looks make them cool, although I intend on making an Undead charecter too (I actually like Orcs more, but dont want something too close to Troll), Trolls are cool as a vicious warrior people, with their voodoo stuff, I think blizzard has done a good job with their looks :-)

It is because that htey lost to humans and they have never re-orginized is why we view them as "weak". I for one believe that they are a strong race when they work together. They almost killed the High Elves, and possed threats to the Arathi clan, so they ARE strong.

They were strong. The Amani Empire (these are Forest Trolls I am pretty sure) almost wiped out the High Elves, but they enlisted the help of the Arathi humans. Near the Alterac Mountains, the combined force of Elves and Humans clashed with the troll warbands. As the humans held their ground, the Elven sorcerers and the limited amount of Human Magi unleashed fire spells on the Zul'Aman's armies. The trolls fled, and they were pursued, hunted down, and massacred.

They never recovered. Again, I think these are the Forest Trolls. The Ice Trolls had their own feud with the Dwarves, and they are still relatively strong I think. Now that the Troggs have began warring with the Gnomes and Dwarves in Dun Morogh, the Ice Trolls see an opportunity.

Dark Trolls I don't know much about...could someone fill me in on them?

And the Jungle Trolls...I believe the Darkspear Tribe/the trolls you play as in World of Warcraft, are Jungle trolls.

As for a 5th race of trolls, Desert Trolls, that sounds very interesting. The book "The Last Guardian" mentions a 5th race of trolls, and Khadgar searches Medivh's library but can't find any trace of a 5th race of trolls. I haven't finished the book, so don't ruin it for me whether or not he does eventually find it or anything.

Yeh, I think they have the most potential for this reason - because their missions could be to unite and take back their ancient empires, etc.

If I formed a role playing Troll guild I would probably try to do this, raiding the land back from the Undead, Dwarves and Humans, maybe founding a city if ya can do that kinda thing.

EDIT: Interesting viper, I will try to get that book, as Trolls and Orcs are my favorite warcraft universe races. You are right, the forest Trolls are the Amani, and one of their abandoned holy cities was built on by the elves to make Quel Tahlas, which triggered the war, as for the Dark Trolls, from what ive found, they seem to be primative cave dwellers, with no civilisation unlike their surface couterparts, but still know voodoo, etc.

I dont know what a life quest is, although I heard of it, the official beta site wasnt clear about it, is it race specific missions?

I really hope Trolls can get some really good missions, not just off Horde Trolls, but also travel to Stranglethron and get some off wild Jungle tribes, like 'Destroy Human Settlement' and stuff :-)

Life quests are being kept under wraps, probably because Blizzard doesn't want their storylines to get out.

Basically, as far as I know, they can be race specific, class specific, or both. They are epic quests that will sometimes take even months for you to complete, and they advance the Warcraft storyline and affect the entire world.

Wow, that sounds cool, Blizzard really do seem to be adressing all the bad things that other MMOs have suffered from, and this kinda class/race specific epic storytelling is what other MMOs have lacked.

Heres a bit more Troll stuff:

-The Frostmane Trolls, (probably a tribe of Ice, rather than a new tribe, or renaming, like Darkspear is a tribe of Jungle), once ruled over the frigid lands of Dun Morogh, only to have their empire fall to Dwarven armies. These tribal creatures were driven to the hills in retreat -- a shameful blow to their warring nature. With King Magni’s forces split between the Alliance Wars and quelling the Trogg invasion, the Frostmane Trolls have seized the opportunity to reclaim Dun Morogh in an attempt to restore the kingdom that crumbled under Dwarven might ages ago.

-The Jungle Trolls are dark, superstitious creatures who revel in the hunt and the rigors of personal combat. In ancient times, the Jungle Trolls reigned over the lands south of the Redridge Mountains. Though their glorious kingdoms have since fallen to ruin, they seek to reclaim the dark majesty of their former empire. Equipped with voodoo magics and unparalleled combat skills, these Trolls have become relentless in their efforts to reclaim their jungle homeland.

And this page is absolutle great:

http://wow.warcraftstrategy.com/lore_trolls.php -

Overview

Trolls are one of the most barbaric native species in the world of Azeroth. They are also one of the most diverse. With at least 4 races of Trolls known (Dark, Ice, Forest, Jungle) and a 5th that has been mentioned (Desert), but never confirmed, you can find a race of Trolls anywhere on Azeroth. Two of these Troll races have allied with the Horde at some point in time. During the Second War, it was the Forest Trolls of Zul'Aman. At present, the Jungle Trolls of the Darkspear Tribe are the Orcs' allies and have been since the start of the Third War.

Dark Trolls

A race known to live underground and in caves, Dark Trolls are very primative and extremely brutal. They are the largest and the rarest of the different Troll species. They could even be considered nocturnal since they come out mostly at night for their hunts. Pure strength is the most revered trait of Dark Trolls. Their shamans practice voodoo and spirit magic similar to their Jungle Troll cousins. Recently, much of the Goblins' inventory has been supplied by the Dark Trolls' pirate raids on the caravans travelling through Ashenvale Forest and Felwood.

Ice Trolls

Ice Trolls prefer cold and frigid environments, most notably the mountains of Dun Morogh and the continent of Northrend. The Frostmane tribe once had a great empire over Dun Morogh, which makes them one of only two Troll species to ever have a truely unified empire. However, this empire fell when the Dwarven armies invaded and claimed Dun Morogh and all of Khaz Modan as their own. This defeat had a horrible affect on morale as they, like all Trolls, are a war-like species. Now scattered throughout the hills of Dun Morogh, the Frostmanes wait for the right time to strike at the Dwarves to reclaim their kingdom. This makes the current world events seem very fortuitous to the Frostmanes as the Dwarves are now dealing with new archelogical endeavors as well as fending off a Trogg invasion.

Forest Trolls

This race of Trolls is found in the most obvious of places, forests. Namely the forests of Lordaeron. They show a strong hatred for all other races. Most of their hatred is geared towards the High Elves of Quel'thalas. The Forest Trolls had lived in Zul'Aman for several thousand years before the Great Sundering. Soon after the Great Sundering the high-borne survivors of the Night Elves that were outcast landed on their shores claiming them as their own and founding Quel'thalas. War ensued between the two races for a considerable amount of time.
World of Warcraft Lore

In order to gain the upper hand after years of the struggle, the High Elves made an agreement with the Humans of Lordaeron (who at the time were under the flag of the Arathor Emprie). They would teach the Humans their arcane magics if the Humans would aid them against the Forest Trolls. This led to many defeats for the Forest Trolls and they became desperate. Holding out for as long as they could, one day fate went in their favor. The Orcs had come to Azeroth by way of the Dark Portal. After winning many battles in the nation of Stormwind, the Orcs moved north. In an attempt to turn the tide against the High Elves, the Trolls allied with the Orcs after seeing their formidable might. This is a rarity for Forest Trolls as they only ally with others when a greater enemy can be destroyed.
World of Warcraft Lore

Although this alliance between the Orcs and Trolls did help their cause, ultimately the Second War was lost to the Alliance. The Forest Trolls no longer seeing a benefit of staying with the Horde left the Orcs to rot in the Human controlled internment camps.

Little is known about the Forest Trolls' current plans and most assume they have gone back to their barbaric, tribal ways. Now that the High Elven kingdom of Quel'thalas is gone and controlled by the Undead, the Trolls may have little hope of gaining back the ancestral land that is rightfully theirs. Along with losing their land, they have lost all chances of establishing their own kingdom, something they have wanted for many millenia.

Jungle Trolls

Before the First War ever began, even before the Quel'dorei invasion of the Forest Trolls lands...the Jungle Trolls of Stranglethorn Vale maintained and empire that covered the southern reaches of Azeroth. This great empire was no fluke as they are easily the most civilized species of Trolls. However, their great empire has fallen long ago for as of yet unknown reasons. All Jungle Trolls seek a common goal to reclaim their lands and reforge their mighty civilization.

Within their current social structure, tribes are all lead by the most powerful warriors and bloodlines are strongly held on to. The laws and traditions of the Jungle Troll tribes are watched over and enforced by their Witch Doctors and Shadow Hunters. All matters will take into consideration the honor of the inividuals, the family, the tribe, and the troll species as a whole. Those deserving punishment may be ritually scarred or worse; however, this is always secondary to the loss of honor.

A unique aspect of the Jungle Trolls is their use of voodoo magics. When a Troll dies it is given power over a certain aspect of nature...such as plants, animals, storms, etc. When the Witch Doctors cast spells it is said the spirits of past Trolls are aiding them. Witch Doctors adorn themselves with elaborate outfits and painted symbols when performing one of the many lengthy rituals of the Junlge Trolls. There is a ritual for almost any conceivable event.

With their honorable and proud ways, the Jungle Trolls are a great addition for the new Horde. While escaping the internment camps of the Humans, Thrall and his Orcs crashed on some islands near Kalimdor and the Maelstrom. There he found the Troll, Sen'jin, who lead a band of isolated Jungle Trolls. After dealing with their Human pursuers, a band of Murlocs rose and took them all prisoner. They were to be sacrifices for their evil goddess, a Sea Witch. After breaking free of their prison, Thrall escaped with his Orcs and several of the Trolls from the island. However, in the final battle with the Murlocs, Sen'jin lost his life.

Taking these Troll refugees with him the rest of the way to Kalimdor, Thrall begin a new alliance with Trolls. The rest of the Darkspear Tribe lived on the Echo Isles. After the Battle of Mt. Hyjal, Thrall set to work on founding the new Orc nation of Durotar. A new peace had been brokered with the Humans lead by Jania Proudmoore living on Theramore Isle. This peace did not last for long. A new Human threat had been seen landing on the shores of Durotar...

In addition to this raiding party, an armada attacked the Echo Isles and the Darkspear Tribe of Trolls lead by Vol'jin, who had to be evacuated to Orgrimmar. The Orcs helpfulness in the Trolls time of need only solidified their alliance, and engraved upon the Trolls the new enemy they had in the Humans. What is to come next in the Horde's plight is unknown.
