Alchemy w/o Herbalism

I'm a little confused on how many professions I can have, but I seem to have a spot for at least one more. I'm a Troll Hunter and currently have Engineering, Mining, Fishing, and First Aid. I'm thinking that potions would be a big benefit because I rarely need healing, except occassionaly during a bad pull or PvP where I need alot of it instantly. I don't know if First Aid works in combat or if it heals fast enough. So I was thinking Alchemy would be best.

Would Alchemy be of benefit if I wasn't able to also have Herbalism? I'd have to buy all the ingredients I take it, and that may make the skill marginally useful. Maybe I should go Enchanting instead? I don't think I need cooking because I have Troll regeneration. Any advice is welcome.

You can only have 2 main professions, which you have in Mining/Engineering.

First aid, fishing, and one more i think, are secondary.

But alchemy, herbalism, enchanting are main professions.

Besides that, being an Alchemist without being a herbalist is a major pain in the behind - I tried it once with an alternate. You keep mailing yourself herbs over and over again if you have a herbalist alternate (and especially at lower levels those 30c adds up), or you pay huge amounts to get a reasonable skill by buying ingredients. Assuming you can get them in the first place: a guildmate needed earthroot for a quest, and none was on offer that evening.

I'll try reading the FAQ before posting next time. Thanks though.

Yea alch w/ out herb is not worth the pain. Minnig and engineering are really cool if you get emm high enough. Also, the third 2ndary skill is cooking which may be beneficial sicne i don;t see many people w/ very hgih cooking skills.

I have cooking near 300 last I looked. It's handy for most of the game, but after level 50 it's hard to find recipes if your fishing skill sucks like mine does. All the high cooking recipes involve caught fish and I just don't much have the patience to fish at this point - especially since quail drops are frequent enough. It does help on saving money up to level 50 though not having to buy food - which my warrior really goes through.

As for alch w/o herb? Don't even think of doing it. That'd be a huge money sink as the folks who do only gathering skills are hoping that there's lots of people not doing gathering that they can get rich off of. Which of course means you get poor....

Alchemy without Herblism...

I just wanted to comment on Alchemy without Herblism a little.

Currently I have Alchemy/Herblism. However, my long term play has always been to ditch Herblism. Leveling up Alchemy without Herblism would be a horrible pain, however, once you're a maxed out artisan @ level 40 + Herblism becomes less important. My plan has always been to dump Herblism and Pick up enchanting. I've put quite a lot of thought into this and believe it to be a sound plan. Once a decently high level is reached, buying the herbs needed to make potions for yourself isen't a big deal. At this level I don't plan on selling any potions, only making ones that I wish to use myself. The only selling I'll be doing is transmutates, which don't really require any herbs anyway. And since I'm a rogue I plan on farming instance bosses, which will yeald awsome items to disenchant.. my money maker will be selling enchants.

So I do agree that leveling up Alchemy would be a pain without herblism, but once it's suitably high, a change in professions dosen't seem like that bad of an idea..
