Engineering Rogues. Should I choose Gnome or Goblin Engineering?
So it's finally time for me to choose what kind of engineering path I should follow. What I know is that Goblin engineering os mostly explosives with disorientated effects, and that Gnome engineering is more tools and strange items with kind of wierd effects.
Would like to know what engineering-path that fits the rogue the best. Would really appreciate help.
Go with whatever type you like, and then get a friend to go the other type. You can make items for each other and won't have to worry about which is better.
Some especially good items are:
Goblin Sapper Charge: Rogue with instant cast aoe!
The Big One: Rogue with aoe that disorientates people, has a cast time though so try casting it from stealth, this is trickier to use. Sort of useful if your side is about to charge and you want some extra confusion in the enemy ranks.
Net-O-Matic: Stop that mount in its tracks. It has two ways it can 'fail', roots you and your target right next to each other, the other just roots you, so for a rogue, there is really just one that is bad.
Goblin Rocket Helm: A Sap that lasts twice as long and can be used on a target in combat.
Discombobulator Ray: Apparently another mount stopper, haven't tried it myself, but my friend just got the recipe recently so I will soon. As far as I know its more reliable than the net, but has charges, so you decide which you like more.
Catseye Ultra Goggles: I use this over a shadowcraft helm in rogue duels or anytime I'm doing small scale pvp with rogues, it provides a significant advantage over them. Almost always allows me to get the first hit in.
Deepdive Helm: Very convenient when grinding mobs in the water, or when you want to do anything under water, show those undead they aren't safe down there anymore ;)
Goblin Jumper Cables: At first my raid group laughed at them, but after saving us from a couple of wipes they love me for it. Sure its only a 10% chance they will work, and I may already be dead if we wipe, but when we wipe rogues and hunters have the highest chance of survivability and if for some reason we don't have any other anti-wipe, a 10% chance is alot better than a long walk back and having to clear respawns.
Ornate Spyglass: Ok maybe not so useful, but it is pretty cool, you can make some great up close screenshots with this and it does extend your draw distance a little bit, too bad it can't be used in stealth. Also you don't need engineering to use this.
Combat Pets: Not great, but it can be useful against a caster for interupts and a little extra damage, dangerous for gouge/blind however so better for small group pvp where you set it on a caster you aren't trying to kill right then.
Thats all that I can think of, but I'm sure there are some other useful things.
Go with goblin. The reason is just about all gnome items are tradable with the exception of death ray. Whereas many goblin items are bind on pickup or need to be recharged like mortar. So, as a goblin engineer you can generally use almost all the items from both sides if you find a gnome based engineer to make stuff for you. gnomes however can not use many goblin items.
I am a goblin bsaed. and I also have a net gun, mind control cap, shrink ray, and battle chicken. All from a gnome based friend of mine.
Discombobulator Ray: Apparently another mount stopper, haven't tried it myself, but my friend just got the recipe recently so I will soon. As far as I know its more reliable than the net, but has charges, so you decide which you like more.
The leper gun is amazing, and it doesn't require engineering either so hand them out to your party - It's a low level recipe so the materials are cheap and you can make them as you need them. It casts on the run from 30 yards, drops the other player off their mount and reduces their movement speed and attack rate. It never fails to work and has only a 3 minute cooldown, as opposed to the 10 min cooldown on the netomatic. Only slight problem is it puts the netomatic into a 3 min cooldown when you use the leper gun. I love this thing.
You also kind of forgot to mention the gnomish death ray :)
The thing about goblin engineering is it has arguably the single most useful device out of either tree, that being the stun mortar, but the stun mortar is tradeable and the rest of the goblin tree is rather unimpessive.

The gnomish death ray isn't tradeable, I'm goblin so I can't use it. Also from what I've seen it isn't the best weapon for rogues. You have to sit there and channel it, it does alot of damage to you and then does even more to a single target. I can only think of a few uses for this and it takes up a trinket slot. Of course I've never had the chance to test it, so maybe it is more useful than I know.
There is also the stun mortar, but I generally prefer the netomatic because I only have two trinket slots and one is reserved for Ramstein's Lightning Bolts. I'll have to test it out some more and use the discombobulator as a mount stopper for a while.
