They're both profitable, but the one that'll you'll be able to take stuff to the AH with is mining. My mage has both these professions, and I ENJOY mining more. Nothing is more satisfying than finding an Arcane Crystal in a rich thorium vein and knowing that you just made 20g for a couple seconds of work. But as such. mining is less consistent income. You don't know how many veins you're gonna come across. That being said you can sell a stack of 20 mithril bars for around 3.4g on my server.

For leatherworking, rugged leather sells to vendors for 5s each, so it's a consistent source of income when you're grinding bats or something. And think leather I mail to my alt and he makes those vests that take 7 think leather and 2 sewing stuff to make. With that I turn 7 think leather into a 50s profit which is also nice. And when i make those I of course vendor them cuz people don't buy such crap.

If i had to venture a guess, I'd say mining was more profitable, but you're going to be competing with a lot of horde and alliance for those precious veins later on. So yeah, more money, but less consistent income.

I mine, but have never skinned.... but I have seen some players come and skin beasts after I kill them... basically, leaching off my work. It doesn't bother me at all.... but, it does seem like skinners have an incredibly easy life compared to any other gathering profession. If it was solely for money, I would probably skin and just go in areas where that were above my level and skin other ppls kills (as long as they are not skinning also)

I skin and it is very easy to lvl, i'm lvl 39 and my skinning is 290 (i also leatherwork at lvl 230). Skinning gets hard when you have to start getting the scales from dragons and scorpids for the higher lvl LW recipes. I haven't dared yet but i know the scorpid scales i need for my lvl 39/40 mail will be hard to get.

And yes, as a skinner if i come across a load of dead beasts that haven't been skinned i run around skinning them giggling happily like it's my birthday!

I think you have underestimated how much you can make from skinning though, firstly you get skins just by default when you kill mobs, and they can actually sell quite well in the AH (on my server 10 thick leather sells for 1-2G+).
