There are many explanations of the Honour system but all seem to confuse. This posts will (hopefully) simplify the correct explanations of the Honour Systems for those who don't Understand the explanations before, a sort of' 'Wally's Guide' to Honour.
What is Honour?
Honour is a form of 'points' that you can obtain through certain ways. The more honour you get, the better your Honour Rank is and the more prizes you receive.
So, how do I get honour?
You can get honour by killing almost anything. If any character, person or monster has a grey name then you cannot get honour by killing them. Remember, you can only get honour if you kill the target. You do NOT get it for killing guards, or quest givers, or random town members, or vendors, flight masters or anything else.
How can I get lots of Honour from a few kills?
The ammount of honour you get from a kill depends on a few things;
- The level of your kill vs your own level. E.g. the smaller the level difference the higher the honour
- If you kill something of a higher level than you, you will gain more honour. The higher the kill's level is above yours, the more honour you will receive.
Why can't I just kill lots of weak monsters then?
Going around and killing tons of weak monsters to gain levels/honour is called Grinding. This method is unfair to people who don't have time to grind or just want to play on the off day. If you kill the same creature, person or character again and again you will receive less and less honour until you get no honour for killing them at all!
I am killing lots of things but my honour won't go up!?
remember, your honour 'rank' is only updated once a week. The ammount of kills you get has no reflection on the honour you get from those kills, as you may have killed 1000 weak monsters. Someone may have less kills, say 500 but may receive more honour as those monsters he killed were much stronger. Don't worry about losing your rankinig, it is not reset every week. This is adjusted very well, I shall give you a simple example:
A level 60 kills another level 60 on his own, he will receive around 170 points if the level 60 that has been killed is of the lowest honour rank (see honour ranks). Now, this level 60 would have to kill 8 level 48's to receive the same points! That's a big difference!
So if I obtain the highest honour rank then I can just sit back?
NO YOU CAN'T! Your honour goes down very slowely this means that people who genuinely couldn't play or had 'off' weeks can relax about their rank. However, just sitting back will eventually lead you to get 0 honour again.
Can't I just build up my rank slowely then?
No, to obtain the very first honour rank you must get at least 25 honourable kills on a SINGLE week before you can be placed in the honour rankings. Don't worry, you don't have to get 25 kills every week to stay in a rank, you just need that ammount to be put into the Honour ranks for the first time.
I got 500 honour points on my server and didn't go up any levels, my friend on another server got 100 and gained an honour rank! How?
Each week when your honour is updated, Blizzard uses your honour and puts you on a 'table' of honourable kills for you own server. Therefore The Horde (assuming you and your friend are both Horde) may be killing hundreds of things in your friends server, meaning honourable kills have less 'value' over there. Your server, however may have The Horde killing only scores of things, meaning honourable kills are 'valued' higher.
If I start killing really weak things won't I get Dishonour?
For the moment, no! There is no dishonour yet. In the next patch dishonour will be released, meaning slaying innocent characters or very weak players will result in penelties!
I got this really cool armour but I lost my honour ranking through not playing! What will happen to it!?
Luckily, all the items you gain as prizes are kept, no matter your honour rank but if you are not a high enough honour rank you just can't wear them. They will simply be drafted into your item pouches if you can't wear them.
What are contribution points?
Contribution points are what you get when you kill something. They are changed almost every day according to certain factors like the ammount of things killed etc! Contribution points are turned into honour points at the end of the week. So on high 'peak' weeks (e.g. holidays) you will probably receive less contribution points (CP's) and therefore less honour points, which are what CP's are changed into at the end of the week.
I'm a priest! How am supposed to get honour?
Priests can gain honour like parties gain expereince. When a team kills something the CP's are spread out across the whole team. If you had a team of 3 for example and you killed something you would receive 1/3rd of the CP's for that kill.
What if I do most of the damage then? Won't the priest (who did nothing but just heal) get less than me!?
Not if you are in a team. However, if you are solo fighting with a group of people then if you do, say 10% of the damage on a thing and someone else from outside of your official team kills it then you will still receive 10% of the CP's for that kill.
That's not fair! Won't area of effect spells just take all of the honour!?
No! Area of effect spells (AoE) will not be greatly effective. You may do about 10% of the damage to a number of people, but providing all of those targets eventually die during the battle only then will you receive the CP's for them. Even then, if you are in a team it wouldn't matter as the CP's are split evenly. If a single person kills around 2 or 3 enemies solo they will probably receive more CP's than a mage who did 10% of the damage to 10 enemies.
How do I get my prizes then!?
To get them you must be able to acces certain Honour 'shops'. These shops are only open to you after you gain a certain ranking. Even then the prizes cost you money, however they are very cheap compared to what you would pay for equivalent weapons/armour that is not Honour items.
So what are the Honour ranks?
There are 14 in total, each harder to achieve than the other but it's worth it. Just to give you example of extremeness of Honour, 1 in 1000 players will acheive the top ranking! Each ranking allows you to buy even better Honour items. Visit the official World of Warcraft Server if you would like a list of names for each rank and the unlockable items for each rank too.
The whole place is going crazy on the PvP servers! People are slaughtering each other, I can't even walk for two minuits without being jumped! Why?
This is due to the Honour system being in the early stages yet. In the next patch, when HUGE battlegrounds with high Honour orientated quests and fighting is availabe then you will see World of Warcraft calm down again. But watch out when fighting a battleground, if I am right they will be ablsolute havoc and you'll see insanly huge fights inside.
Well that's a rap folks! If there's any aspects I missed out tell me so I can add it. Please give me feedback too!

A good thread that answers alot of questions people have about the honor system. Answered my one question about the difference between rankings on different servers as it relates to the number of kills required.
You used lots of "!" which means you seem very excited. Someone must have had a good amount of HKs this week.

Well, the huge use of '!' is just for emphasis. I was trying to explain Honour to very simple 3 year-olds. Anyway, if there are ANY other subjects on honour you need answering or I have missed please respond so that I can update my 'Wally's Guid' to honour. Plus, I don't even have WoW!
you should think about getting it, i hear its a good game. :happy34:
i suppose i do have one question. when either i or someone kills a horde player i see the HK rank thing pop up on my screen. Sometimes it says Sargent or Grunt or whatever rank. Now i tried to look for a pattern in them but i couldn't see one so my guess is that it relates to the rank of the person i killed. But i didn't think of that until later so my question is what are those little displays meant to show?

You were right... They display the rank of the player you just killed.
The real problem with dishonorable kills is that even a level 20 hunter can "mark" an enemy without any chance to resist that ... the same is true for Paladin stuns, which can affect much higher targets. That means they can hurt / annoy the high ups, but the level 60s cant retaliate without losing honor (via dishonorable kills). Level should make people much more resistant to these things IMO.
The Honour title of the enemy IS relvent to your CP's. Think about it, isn't it common sense that you get a better reward for killing a Grand-Marshall (top alliance rank) then an officer (lowest)? YES! I Would try to put this on the main post but I can't edit it oh and err, I'll try to get WoW when I have a comp to play it. I was gunna get this really cool 3.6 ghz 2mb RAM one..... :love57: . Oh well, my dad hasn't got it yet. NVM

Yes, Blizzard are tackling this problem as we speak. I believe that after a certain ammount of levels below you (e.g. 20-30) you don't get dishonour if the following contidtions are met:
a)they started it
b)you asked them to stop (GMs and others will probably monitor non-dishonoured kills) and they don't stop
Anyway, that's what I THINK. Doesn't mean you can be lv 60 egging on noobs coz:
a)even a noob knows when to leave someone alone
b)if the noob is stupid enough to fight, the high-up will get dishonour. haha!
This post is just to prove something. It doesn't really relate to the honour system, just wanna prove to all you Blue Coat Guys that me (jiv) DID create this post! Wheeldon, you suck, Ewen, you too. Alliance scum...
Anyway, just as I said, keep sending your queries on the Honour system! I am waiting for your question, the Honour Guru shall answer... :happy14:
