First time pvp

What advice would you give to someone who has never played pvp before (on WOW or anything else) but wanted to try it? Is there an idiot's guide somewhere? Should you start off with duelling? Can anyone even remember being in this position?

First you go up to someone of the opposing faction. Then you attack. Then you either kill him or die. It's not too hard.

My most important piece of advice will be to start PvPing early in your characters life (and by early I mean no later than lvl 30). At that level, most classes wont have access to too many different skills, and the battle wont feel too overwhelming. Remember that you not only have to know what your own skills do, but also what your oponent can do. If you wait too long (like to lvl 50), you will not only have a large array of skills (most of which have a very good reason for being in the game) to use, but you oponent will aswell. If you loose a fight, you should at the very least know why you lost, and that means knowing what your oponent did that you forgot (or was unable) to counter.

And also, every once in a while, you should push yourself to the limit in PvE. Pick fights with mobs that you arnt too sure if you can defeat (depending on your class, elites 5 +/- levels below you are a good choice). In fights like that, every little bit counts, and by doing this you learn how to play your class to its fullest potential, and equally important (if you play on a PvP server, which I assume your not) how to get away from a bad situation.

Just jump into a PvP server and get destroyed - you'll soon learn what not to do. you can practice in Duels first but I always find that people don't try half as hard in a Duel, I for one never use health or mana potions unless I could actually die, just doesn't seem worth it.

in my oppinion, PvP is something in which everyone naturally sucks, it's not until you've taken a beating off every class that you start to find your feet.

my advice is what ever type of server you're on pve/pvp/rp go to the battle grounds as soon as you're able (warsong gulch at lvl 10), admittedly you wont make many kills untill youre at least lvl 15 and will die quite a lot. Bbut it will give you an idea as to what abilities people near youre lvl use/dont use, which classes are hard or easy to defeat for you and if youre lucky a few good quality same lvl allies to group with in future.

Also it will give you at least a few honor kills to get you started in the pvp ranks as well (getting rank 1 is so easy; get 20hk in one week and impossible to lose once youre there)

In WoW I would switch on "World Defence" channel. If it says "Tarren Mill under attack" (or Crossroads) go there and check it out. You might want to join in and stay close to the town for safty.

Alternately join Alterac Valley (if 51 and higher) or any other Battleground and do as you are told in raid chat. Start with hanging out defending the flag with somebody else and learn.

That's how I started...3 months later...7000 Honorary Kills and rank 7 ;)

I think people tend to ignore their best skills when pvp'ing since they never use them in pve. What class and level are you?

I play a warlock and I often find myself using fear, mana drain all of my DOT's curse of exaustionand drain life. Some of these I use all the time but exaustion and drain mana are pretty much only for pvp. Pallies aren't so tough when they don't have the mana to heal themselves, Rogues aren't so bad when they are slowed, weakened and DOT'd. Generally the easiest class to beat is your own though since people rarely know how to compete against themselves.

Get some buddies of diferent classes and start dueling, let them know that you want all out warfare, no holding back - maybe set a prize and do it in the arena as a guild? Once you have killed your friends a few times try Battlegrounds then try a raid or 2 (are you on a pve server?)

Most importantly don't get mad when you lose - and yes, you will lose sometimes.

Good luck and have fun! :surprise:
