I am basically writing this to find out if i ganked some horde by mistake a few nights ago on a PVE server.
A few nights back my Lvl48 NE Hunter and a similar lvl NE warrior were on the coast of the hinterlands completing a quest that required picking up bottles of grog for somone in Booty bay.
We were already in PVP mode due to a challenge for a fight from some horde in STV.
I was making my way along the coast and stumbled apon a horde camp. Knowing i was still in PVP mode, i backed off and started to head back in the other direction. A lvl49 Undead mage came charging out in PVP mode and asked for a duel.
I declined and went about collecting more bottles.
A couple of minutes later i got hit by a spell from the mage which sent the cat into attack. I finished him off fairly quickly with a few shots and a sting to remove his mana. Mage - Mana = Easy Kill. During the short battle he kept on using the wait emote. He died and i went on my way.
He reappeared and again he fired a spell at me. Again, the battle was over fairly quickly.
I have not won many PVP battles because i tend to stay away from them or end up getting bushwacked by horde players several levels above me, but the ease of the wins made me rub it with a few /train emotes.
Thinking that this would be the end of it, i made my way up the coast to find the NE Hunter that i was grouped with before we made our way back to southshore.
The Undead Mage appears again, this time with a lvl45 undead warlock. I was killed fairly quickly. I thought, 'Fair enough. You got me back with backup, go you!'
As soon as i rez'd they killed me again. That was just plain nasty. I /w the warrior and told him i was getting tag teamed by a couple of undead. He joined me and we had a battle that basically worked out as us 8, them 3.
That was not enough for them. After another couple of minutes they reappeared with a Tauren Hunter and killed us. When we rez'd, they killed us again after camping round our bodies with an additional lvl 51 Troll Hunter. On the second rez, they were not around.
The warrior said that we should just leave as we were out numbered. I wanted revenge. So as he heartstoned i found them on my radar minus the troll hunter. They seemed to have been having trouble with a few of the turtles that were on the beach. I killed the two undead fairly quickly with a multi shot and then killed the Tauren shortly after that because their health was low.
Thinking that i had my revenge, i started to head back to southshore only to bump into the Troll hunter. It was an even match until the undead and tauren turned up and made short work of me. Again, they camped around my body, when i rez'd they killed me.
The second time i never rez'd but went to my body to find them still waiting. They hung around for about 10 minutes waiting for me to rez before disappearing.
What i want to know is, did i gank them and make them so mad that they kept on coming back with more horde or is this what normally happens in PVP battles?
General rule I always follow. Never KoS unless they kill you first. For instance if I'm in Tyr's Hand and some guy owns me, I quickly res, kill him back, and carry on whatever I'm doing. If the guy gets backup to own me, I move to another spot to train, and carry on.
Sounds to me like the system, and your philosophy worked as the game intends...
You were in pvp mode, and got fired upon...both of your groups killed each other a bit, and the game moved on...
I'm on a pvp server where the first battle often starts much more anonymously, with the first party finding the second party engaged in battle with a mob, and the first party ends of attacking the second party while he is being hit by the mob....heh
there is no 'please duel me'....there is 'BOOM'...on my server...
There is no such thing as "Gank". That word was made up by people who got their feelings hurt, when some immature person on a PvP server camped them for an hour or 2. You are on a PvE server. That means you HAVE TO FLAG to fight. If your flag is on, it's war. Period. They can't complain, you can't get in trouble, you were not "ganking". It's a game about killing. So I wish people would stop getting butthurt, when it happens to them. I'm glad you enjoyed your PvP experiance. Do it more often. If you don't let stupid things like that get in the way, it can be a whole lot of fun.

Go point. My rule applied for me but I am PvP server :)
I think for PvE if there is someone with PvP enabled, then it's free honor if the guy is there, might as well go for the kill.
lol, I use the word "gank" all the time, just to signify killin the other faction.
As I am also in a PvP server, there is no mercy. It's survival of the fittest. If you get killed, you better rez a little ways away and get some backup or learn2play.
I am fortunate enough to be fairly good at games that I play, so I usually do not die. In fact, just yesterday, I was running around Stonetalon mountains and found a lvl 28 ne hunter picking on a lvl 20 orc warrior who had very little armor. I decided to help the guy out and un-ghostwolfed (is that even a word?) and then put on my lightning sheild. The lvl 20 orc started to run to me for protection (I am only lvl 24 shaman) and the wierdest thing happened. The lvl 28 hunter turned around and started to run like a bat out of hell. Since he was running toward one of my party members, I simply told my party to *edit* him, in which he did :D The lvl 20 thanked me and moved on his way.
Soon after this, I started to run up the mountain trail a little further. Sure enough, here is a lvl 28 ne rogue fighting a lvl 20 tauren druid and a lvl 20 orc warrior (who was dead atm).
I came up and un-ghostwolfed again, then put on rockbiter (my LS wasn't gone from before yet) and started to run to the lvl 20's. The rogue tried to stealth, but I fireballed him before he could, placing a DoT on him.
After a small fight, he was dead, and the lvl 20's were thanking me. Twas quite a travel to sun rock retreat. All I wanted was a flight path too lol.
Anyway, in a PvP server, duels are sudden and it's either kill or be killed. There's no "ganking" on a PvE server.

The replies here are correct... Ganking really just doesn't exist other than as another word used to describe eliminating the opposing faction. Using it in any other way really is pointless, and the game WAS designed for one faction to be able to attack, and kill, the other faction REGARDLESS of any level difference between the two or more players.
I am also on a PvP server now, and I never ever get an honest battle.... I'm happily minding my own business and questing, and then BANG! it all starts... Well, there are times I happen to be aimlessly wandering and find THEM minding their own business questing, and I shamlessly wait for opportunity :)
The main point is, I dish it out, I better be able to take it. Otherwise, I should just get my little fragile ego somewhere else or into another game :)
Now, life on a PvE server is a bit different :) You can get away with anything, UNTIL you flag yourself PvP... If you flag yourself PvP, then you MUST understand the consequences of doing that and be ready for "Worst case scenario" to happen. After all, you VOLUNTARILY flagged yourself...
Personally? Yeah, there are days I get my ash handed to be hand over fist... then there are days I get to do the handing.... Its all part of the game, and I enjoy it both ways... I mean, if I always won.. what would be the point of it all?? Think of it as.. well.. a challange :)
please refrain from the use of words such as "rape" while talking about a computer game. It bothers me to see folks use such an ugly word for real evil in real life to describe a computer game.
I notice that shamen players tend to use that word more often. Must be from that Troogdoor cat on their forums.
Thanks and you can flame me all you want I don't care.

I find your avatar to be entirely too orangey/black and sometimes the words you type are spelled wrong but not often so it confuses me!

I completely agree with you on this one. It is a very ugly word for a very ugly act that has no place on game forums people are desensitized now by it being so mainstream, kind of like calling things gay or retarded. I hate those words too by the way.
As for the original question ... he shot at you first ... twice ... That is not a ganking.
(I use gank as killing a player that had no chance against you - be it far lower level or at very low life etc)

I too use the gank term in this way...if you can tell what lvl the opposing player, and thier lvl is a color other than grey, then it's an equal fight. If you kill someone grey in lvl or if the person killing you is lvl ??,then that to me is a gank.Or if you prefer an HK(honour kill)is fair, anything else is ganking.
I play on a PVP server, and have actually helped lower lvl opposing faction players several times.
