The Crystals of Darkness

OK, i'm going to give some background first. If your not intrested at all skip to my next post. But I'd advise against it.

One day last june I was sitting in my room next to the AC vent, it was hot as heck... I grabbed a notebook and started to sketch... I got the idea of a canyon larger than any immagineable... And sketched it... Then, for one reason or another, I decided it would be very cool volcanic on the bottem.

So with that, I got the sudden Idea that it would be very good with a story attached... So after scratching together ideas I started to write..

I'm gonna post what i've typed up of this story so far... I don't know exactly how long it is, but we will see. And I got several ideas from WoW, so I felt it would be fitting for this to be a place to post it.

I will type up the rest of it depending on what people think of it, because it is very long and it becomes.... annoying... to be typeing pointlessly for an hour or more.

ok here you go.

---------------

Prelude

Long ago, there were four magical crystals that gave the powerful wizards of the ancient twarntan empire their power. This empire was the most powerful empire for almost 3,000 years, but, it was struck with a plague. The survivors no longer had enough power to defend the empire, and were forced to let it fall.

Before it fell however, the crystals were hid in desolate places.

The first, the crystal of earth, was hid deep in the depths of the great mithral mines at zanitia.

The second, the crystal of fire, was thrown in the crater at the volcano of Mantgimus

The third, the water crystal, was dropped into the swamps of the Innakcikian river delta.

The fourth , the crystal of air, was hidden atop some unknown mountintop in the yaticcant mountains in the far north.

But soon after this powerful beasts were drawn to these crystals, and they became nearly inaccessible, for those who tried were never seen again, and presumably eaten. The monsters love human fleash.

The monsters built great temples with these crystals in the center.

Now, in these more rescent times the monsters are still there, but one of the crystals, the crystal of air, was stolen by a powerful dark wizard. He now commands the monsters and is conqoring at will.

He has also tried to take the other crystals, but failed, only causing the monsters to turn to pure evil and raid surrounding lands.

And he has besieged the city of Janita, but the walls are holding strong, same with the gates.
No army can challenge this wizards forces, not even the ancient twarntans could have.

Four of this cities elite solders, also good friends with each other and also powerful spell casters, plan on doing something about this.

They plan on getting the crystals, and destroying them properly. Meaning they had to come in contact with a diamond, a ruby, an emerald, and a sapphire at the same time.

They would find an destroy the 3 crystals this wizard hasn’t found yet. Then they plan on destroying the fourth. That means fighting the wizard himself, or at least capturing the crystal and escaping, destroying the crystal, and coming back to finish off the wizard.

---

Darathi, Kajayna, Iwartian and Tarna were all ready to go into the old coal mine, now a route into and out of the city.

The dark wizard Gatyon did not control the other end of the mine, it's entrance on the side of a mountain several miles away. To the north. On the other side of the mountain front, fortunately. And Gatyon was not foolish enough to attack one of three of the gates into the mountains, the only breaches in a solid 15,000 foot cliff that was nearly vertical.

The mine had been widened into a tunnel, and had magic enchanted quarts crystals hung on the ceiling to give light off.

You could fit 5 horses next to each other comfortably in the passage now, and it was used to bring supples into the town. The quartet of warriors set off, and they were eager to do this job.

They set off into the tunnel, and after a 6 hour horse ride through, they reached the other end. A busy city perched on a mountainside, the capitol of Radina.

-- End of the prelude --

-- Chapter 1, The City of Radina

The team of Darathi, Kajayna, Iwartian and Tarna all stepped out into the sunlight at the same time. It was a beautiful, cloudless day in this city perched on the edge of the chasm of death, the could see the bottom, seventeen miles below, with it's usual open lava lakes and crystal - blue rock. If only they could get down there to mine some of that nearly pure mithral. But people have tried to cross that, and most don't even make it to the bottom. Down there, the air is hot enough to boil water and bake bread, and it bakes a human too.

After some looking around, they found out the day wasn’t entirely clear, Mt. Heolis was erupting - again. But that was two hundred miles east, so they weren't worried. They had to go west anyways.

That was just as bad.

"West, starting about 50 miles west, is the end of the valley," Darathi was explaining to Kajayna, "it is a chaotic series of giant stone steps, several square miles in aria each, tilted to a 25 degree angle towards the sides, and in the middle, at the lowest point is a chasm a few hundred yards across with nothing but lava at the bottom. At the start of this chasm, at it's highest point, is the temple of fire."

The team was camping on the top floor in the palace of Radina. They were sixteen miles above the lowest step, and could see that the chasm was erupting again, five mile high lava fountins were gushing from it, creating massive flows. Seeing anything come nearly a third of the way up the valley was awe-inspiring.

The sun had set below the mountains already, and the sky was getting dark.

The city was on a flat chunk of limestone sticking out because it was stronger than the sandstone below it (barely below it, more like next to it, but it sticks out 800 feet for every mile from sandstone bluffs below, above this was about a thousand feet of shale, then the devil's cliff. A 15,000 foot sheer drop to the plains below. On this side, the limestone was flat, or nearly. A seven hundred foot bench covered the city.

Whatever had made this valley had been something of unimaginable power, to have been able to lift chunks of rocks this big to nearly vertical.

Darathi was the only female in the group, she was a very powerful knight (but not one of those that uses horses), she can also cast any ice or fire magic spells, and most lightning.

The next morning, they set off to the temple of fire, escorted by fifty Radinian Black Guard, who have earned their nickname among Radina's enemies of "Blue shadows of death". The group had no idea what wait for them, to try to storm the temple alone, kill the crystals guardian, and make it out alive with the crystals would be a huge accomplishment. They could do it, but the making it out alive was the question.

-- chapter 2, the temple of fire --

Darathi, Kajayna, Iwartian and Tarna and the team of guards stepped through the haze and smoke to see the entrance to the temple of fire, home of the crystal of fire. The entrance was a narrow arch bridge crossing a massive red hot lava flow. They began to cross the bridge. About half way across they heard a great roaring. Darathi drew her sword, Kajayna grabbed his bow and an arrow, Iwartian drew his mytheral daggers, one in each hand and Tarna summoned an ice elemental, and held it in her hand, ready to relinquish it's power.

Down swooped a dragon, landing on the bridge landing in front of them. Kajayna hit it in it's right eye with an arrow, and Tarna cast the powerful ice bolt spell that she had learned in a distant land on the dragon. The dragon, incased in a block of ice, fell into the lava, shattering as it hit the cliffs on the way down. Kajayna said, harshly, "one down, who knows how manny to go"

Meanwhile, to the east, a huge force was assembleing. The dark wizard of Inatan was asembleing his full strength to assult Janita. Not a mere force of 20,000 as he had previously sent at the city. Every single day, 10,000 more was walking through the gate of chaos. They were assembleing just beyond sight of Janita. They had been doing it for 6 weeks. They had a force of 420,000 asembled, and they set off for Janita.

They continued into the temple, undisturbed, which they all felt was unnerving. Suddenly, some small rocks and dirt fell from the bridge above them, but nothing more happened. The black guard behind them drew bows and swords. About a minute after this, they reached the fire crystal, and about fifty dragons, and a dragon lord. The black guard rushed in, and in a minute all the smaller dragons were dead. But the king dragon had a look of pure furry on it's face. It cut three of the black guard in half in a single sweep of it's claws, and tarna's ice spells didn’t do a thing to it, and it was questionable if it could even feel arrows or not.

The dragon, more than fifty feet high and two hundred feet long would make quite a match.

And so the battle began.

The dragon shoots a great ball of fire at the quartet, and they all dodge it. Darathi made a nice shot with her crossbow up the dragon's left nostril, and it clearly felt this. It took a great swing at her with it's claws, and it's aim was true, the only thing that kept her from being sliced in half or crushed was her armor. She immediately got back up and had another well placed bolt in the creatures eye. Somehow Iwartian had gotten on the dragons back, and was holding onto one of it's large horns with one hand and stabbing the dragon with his other hand, and the dragon could not manage to throw him off. The dragon opened it's mouth to shoot a great ball of fire at tarna, but she was too fast. She shot an ice spell into it's wide open mouth, and it began to freeze. Iwartian jumped off quickly. They let the foul beast sit frozen to death.

They rushed to destroy the fire crystal, touching it with a sapphire, diamond, ruby and emerald at the same time, and it shattered.

And the earth began to shake.

Cracks opened up, and smoke began to pour out. The group took the hint. They ran for the arch bridge as fast as they could, a chunk of the roof of the building smashing a bridge they had just crossed. When they came to the arch bridge great cracks had appeared in it, and the lava below was flowing deeper and faster. The four charged across the bridge, and it crumbled just as they made it across. And from the middle of the temple a great fountins of lava began to gush from the depths of the earth, this one looked as if it would compare to the ones from the base of the canyon, so they kept running, for that would even kill the strongest of dragons. They escaped up to the higher cliffs, and were then safe.

It turns out that it had been the crystals evil that had held the magma at bay...

A day and a half later they walked victorious (for now) into ridana.

-- Chapter 3, the fall of Janita--

The army of Inatan had set off, and Janita was in the cross-hairs. Giant trolls were beating giant drums that could be heard manny miles away, more trolls were pushing great siege towers and sixteen were carrying a massive battering ram, and yet more trolls had large maces. Beneath them, slightly larger than a human but still hardly comeing up to the trolls ankles, were hundreds of thousands of Rakkalan. They looked nearly human in armor, but were vicious beasts.

The guards and archers on top of the walls of Janita and on the towers could hardly believe there eyes.

The army moved closer and closer to the cities, and the trebuchets on top of the walls were fired. Several siege towers crumbled after takeing direct hits from boulders.

Dragon riders sweapt down from high in the sky, and the dragons were picking off the trebuchets quickly. The Rakkalan had left a gap about a hundred yards wide alligned with the gate of Janita. The trolls caried the great battering ram up twards the gate, eight on each side of the ram. They stopped about a quarter mile from the gate, and, pushing the ram, charged straight at the 200 foot high and 300 foot wide gate. The gate held firm, but the iorn drawbars creeked. The gate was made of three feet of steel, it was extremely strong, and yet was the weakest point of the wall. the trolls backed up another quarter mile, and charged again. The gate held again.

The towns solders made the choice to send all but 200 of them through the mines, and all the civilians. Of the 200 that stayed, 100 would try to hold off the enemy at the gate, and the rest would be working at colapesing the mines.

The troll ram struck the gate again, and this time large cracks apeared.

Large crates of mythral sulphate were being placed in the deepest point of the mine.

The trolls swung again, this time the top of the gate broke open forming a hole big enough for ten people to fit through. The archers standing far behind the gate poured arrows through this hole.

All of the crates of mythral sulphate were in the bottem of the mine.

The ram struck the gate again, and this time it broke open. And the siege towers lowered their ramps and Rakkalan poured onto the walls. All but 50 of the solders fled through the mines, and one of those solders threw a tourch at the crates of mythral sulphate. They exploded, and they exploded with such force that it blasted a whole clean up through the mines, and blasted a massive hole in the surface, and then everything within about a mile of that hole fell in, for the explosion had been so powerfull it had vaporized a massive cavern, the rock fell in and blocked the mines, and not just part, two and a half miles of mine was blocked.

Janita had fallen. There would be no return to greatness for this city. This city was now destined to become one of manny ruins dotting the countryside.
At least if the war was lost...
