Chars looked after in instances/raids?

I mean what chars help the most in such situations? To me it seems like pala`s are the most usefull, because they have heal and they can tank for themselves.. Im prolly mistaken here, as I have never done an instance before, just trying to get a picture before I actualy do one.

Assist the main tank on his target, look after yourself as best you can and if you see the priest getting beaten on, be prepared to grab as much aggro as you possibly can and as fast as you can then run towards the tank. If you die, it's ok cause the priest lived =) Just my way of playing instances! Priests and healers will often see this warlock sacraficing himself to keep them alive and kicking!

Based purely on end game raid instances:

(Dwarf) Priests
Druids
Warlocks

Everything else is in abundant supply (excepting possibly very skilled tanks).

Regular instances, it depends quite a bit on where you're going. Warlocks are useful in BRD, Hunters are only really wanted in UBRS and Priests/Paladins are old time favourites for any of the Undead instances.

I couldn't tell you how popular a Shaman is, but I can't imagine them being the most needed of classes.

Rogues and fury warriors love them for that whirlwind thing they do. Have had a shaman main heal Scholomance for us which was amusing. Had no tank either. A mage, 2 rogues, me (warlock) and Shammie main healing. Just another one of those silly runs where we bounce aggro between all 5 of us and cry when we are at Rattlegore cause he hits so damn hard... But a successful run was had and the Shaman received much praise for managing to keep 4 dps nuts alive =) And being the only class (Dunno about Shamans though) unable to ditch aggro...well! I had fun! =P

What about mages? They can pump out a great deal of dps and even from range.

That depends on your server and your guild. Our first Ouro kill had 9 Druids and 6 Priests...

Our alliance of guilds is overrun with Druids, Hunters, and Warriors; we severely lack Warlocks. On the Horde side of the guild, they're overrun with Shamans and Warriors; they're low on Hunters.

Playing a dwarven priest, i just don't get the protection you talk about here.

Everytime i'm taking on the hockey team in UD strat just before we enter the slaughterhouse I shackle one... only to have a hunter/mage/lock break shackle a few times before I can pull it totall away from the others and reshackle while someone dies because I am busy and can't heal anyone. Unless the pally is on his toes and keeps em alive with his heals.

This is just bad communication. You've even got raid markings in 5-man groups now so you can just shove a big orange circle (or whatever) on a mob's head and say "Shackle this. Nobody else hit it". If they're still hitting it after that then you need a new group.
