I've never played WoW before.

I'm looking to buy World of Warcraft and I see it has an expansion pack out. What I'm wondering is if I should buy the expansion pack thing, and will that allow me to play the whole game or do I have to buy the original, and then the expansion pack as well?

I know absolutely nothing about WoW, but have seen lots of people talking about it. I'm sure I'll have more questions and I greatly appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Hi flobgob,

Welcome to the forum and hopefully World of Warcraft.

You'll need to buy World of Warcraft first. You'll get a free month's subscription with that. Everything will be in the box that you need to get started. You could buy the expansion pack (The Burning Crusade) at the same time and your free month will still work. But it depends if you want to go to the expense of both without knowing if you'll like the game.

Hope that helps.

Going along with Ellys post. If you were not planning on rolling one of the two new races...you won't really be missing out on much until much later in the game....a place where it takes some players a year or longer to get to.

The original WoW is extremely cheap, so it's worth a go.

You really can't go wrong with a solid months of entertainment for only $19.99 to give the game a shot :)

Thanks for the info, that definitely helps. I had bought the original but then saw the expansion and wanted to make sure if I needed both or not, but it sounds like I can just start with the original (or have to anyway) and go from there.

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I've never played. Thanks again for the help.

The expansion isn't for sale until Tuesday, so you have a few days to get hooked. If the expansion you saw was for sale - check next time that it's World of Warcraft: the Burning Crusades you're looking at. There is a single-player game "Warcraft" with many expansions and it's not the same game as the World of Warcraft this forum is on about. :-)

[So the game you have is "World of Warcraft" and at a later stage you may want "World of Warcraft: the Burning Crusades" which is the only expansion so far.]

That's always my first thought too, but I suspect that Blizzard has an insanely high trial to full account conversion ratio.

And welcome to the game flobgob!
