There is a turnin you can do once you capture a mine. Coldtooth supplies, Irondeep supplies, or something, there are two quests. Except unlike other turnins I think you actually have to have the quest to grab the supplies. Your cursor will turn into a gear when you mouse over the stacks of boxes.

After grabbing enough some commandos get sent to the field of strife. I have never once seen this.

it takes five piles from each mine, and the commandos are three level 61 elites IIRC (Reavers called on horde side), they attack the enemy base if you have killed the enemy captain I think...
really handy, since they are hard to notice (as riders are easy to notice).

too bad its so hard getting enemy supplies, at least for horde.

the command for them to attack is made at fields of strife, you get a scroll to give to a guy below SF (for horde).

The mines are also worth some bonus honor if you control them at the end of the game. So cap them if you can, but don't make them a priority.

They do give you Stormpike rep if you cap them.

Stormpike rep is useful if you wish to purchase items from the supply officer that is outside the cave in the Alterac Mountains (the original entrance to AV)

another use for a mine is:

cap the mine in enemy territory.. drag duffy (or the horde counterpart) to the mine... let the grunts and peons and guards and surveyors kill duffy :P
