what are patches and is it automatically downloaded into my computer or do i have to look for it? what use does it have?

They are the latest updates to WoW. Any time there is a patch released, it downloads to your computer the next time you try to login to wow.

Blizzard make regular chamges to the game - they release new content, they fix bugs, they make changes to the UI (User Interface) and they make changes to the game mechanics from time to time.

When they make these changes they release a patch - usually on Maintenance Day. The next time you log into the game it will automatically DL the patch and install it for you.

Each patch requires you to accept the EULA and thee terms of usage.

Patch notes (listing all changes) are all on the official site.

i'm gettin wow soon, and i want to have all the patches downloaded and ready to install. i kind of got the gist from my friend that you had to download multiple patches, i take it that this is in the order that tey came out, eg. patch one, then patch two, etc.

i'll keep them all in a separate folder, and when i install the game, can i just double click the file to install it, or will WOW find them on my comp. or what.

next, if all this is true so far, and i'm hoping it is cos i had to type it all, what patches do i need to download, and in what order do i install them, because there seems to be a huge amount of patches in this forum.

Don't worry about what patches you need to download, the game does it all for you.

When you install WoW for the first time, it will ask you to install disks 1,2,3,4,5 etc. Then once the installation finishes, you will launch the game. When you try to play the game the first time, (after creating your account) you will need to log into the game. When you do log in, it will check what version you have, if you do not have the current version(which you will not have out of the box), it will download and apply each patch needed on its own, after every patch download and application, the game will check your current version when you log in, and if you still do not have the current version, a new patch will begin downloading and apply. This may happen a few times. Once all of the patch downloads run and apply, you will be able to log into the game and choose a realm.

If you choose to get the TBC (expansion) you will repeat the patching process again.

Also, just so that you know (I know you will ask this later!) you will not be able to play the game on Tuesdays from very early morning until late morning/early afternoon. This is realm maintenence day and sometimes it is also "patch day". The whole game goes off offline for server maintenence, so don't post a thread in a panic asking why you can't get online, this is normal.

Sometimes a new patch comes out on Tuesday as well, and the next time you log in after a tuesday patch day you will have to wait until the new patch downloads and applies.
