How do you tell when an account has been hacked?

I Hope this is the right place to ask this.
My question is how can you tell when someone's account has been hacked?

My RL friend Brian hasn't been around lately, but I've seen him on in the game.
I took these screen shots of an exchange I had when I tried to send him a tell.

Why don't you call/email/visit your RL friend Brian and see whats up? I ain't clicking those links from a first timer ;)

We have called, visited, I have even checked out the college labs, as well as any net cafe's he could have been playing on.

His landlord hasn't seen him

It sounds like he got hacked IRL. I don't think his WoW account should be your top priority

That is one of the main reasons I've been trying to figure all this out.
If he's just decided to split but is still out there some where playing WoW then I am not going to be all that worried. He is a big boy and can take care of himself... you know... I mean if he is just messing with me and playing one of his games I'd be pissed but I would know that he is ok.

doesnt everyone have cellphones now? i mean even if they dont... leave him a message. if he doesnt wanna talk to you then he doesnt wanna talk to you. lol

Brian is that one guy you know who rarely has a cellphone and when he does he tends to forget to set up the voice mail.

why dont you wait til your friend gets back to the real world and you can ask him them. if an account is hacked, there isnt much you can do without him being there. once it gets banned, he can petition.

But wouldn't be quite the dick move if I flagged his account and it was really him?

Send an in-game mail to his character. Then maybe he'll read it and get in touch with you somehow. (If it's really him playing.)
