Cataclysm Beta: Uldum dungeons Available
Posted 3rd Sep 2010 03:51 AM by Medievaldragon

Beta testers are up for a treat. Daelo informed the Lost City of the Tol'vir is now available for testing. It's a level 85 Uldum dungeon. There's a temporary entrance in the central area of the zone, a bit northeast. All feedback should be submitted to the developers here.

The Halls of Origination is a level 85 dungeon. The entrance can be found inside the large pyramid to the east of Uldum. Feedback may be submitted here.

the Vortex Pinnacle is a level 82-84 dungeon in Uldum. Its entrance is to the southern coast of Uldum high in the air so you need a flying mount. The entrance is disabled for the moment, but you can LFG to the Vortex Pinnacle to access the dungeon. When you die there, your character will be teleported to Dalaran -- this is temporary until they add a placeholder NPC to teleport you back to Uldum. All feedback should be post here.

GamesTM Magazine # 99 interviews Chris Metzen

Warcraft lore community fan (Sarahmoo) from 'ScrollsofLore' posted scans from the Games(tm) magazine issue # 99 / August 5, 2010 (a British publication) which interviewed Chris Metzen. It's a good opportunity for some of you to get to know this Blizzard developer more intimately. His early beginnings, before and after joining Chaos Studios (aka Blizzard Entertainment).

In the interview, you will learn how he views his position at Blizzard, what it feels like, his feelings when he's done a mistake, and how he's overcome them. He's learned from those mistakes. He's a geek and a fan like yourself, and he strives to keep everyone happy, and stay true to the lore because as Metzen says: "We don't own Warcraft any more - the fans own Warcraft now."

Cataclysm: Ashenvale Exploration
Posted 27th Aug 2010 09:01 PM by Medievaldragon

Ashenvale

Today, we take you to a journey through the all-new Ashenvale after the Cataclysm. Ashenvale is one of the regions of World of Warcraft that have undergone heavy changes to its environment and by consequence most of its quests have disappeared, and replaced by new ones that fit the current times' troubles.

It's astonishing to go there and see all this action going on throughout the place. This early at level 20-25 you can see Warchief Garrosh Hellscream and King Varian Wrynn mean business. The Alliance and the Horde are at full all-out war. Period.

Remember that Alliance camp, Maestra's Post? I have nice memories there from my Night Elf character in closed beta 2004, helping a human paladin named Delgren the Purifier with his quests.

Now it is being assaulted by the Horde. And when I say assaulted -- I mean grunts and a helluva bunch of siege vehicles at Maestra's Post and all over the cliff aiming at the nearby Night Elf building. Hopefully, Delgren did what best a Paladin can do in such an outnumbered and hopeless situation ... [bubble + hearth].

Below you can read my observations from each zone of Ashenvale, and screenshots to accompany the descriptions. Hope you enjoy it!

GamesCom 2010: Chilton on Cataclysm Hunter Class Changes
Posted 27th Aug 2010 04:59 PM by Medievaldragon

Tom Chilton was interviewed by Gamespot at GamesCom 2010 to talk about World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Chilton describes the changes done to the Hunter class with focus as its new resource system; why focus instead of energy; why they removed certain stats like penetration and spell power; and their hopes for Mastery to work well.

Gamespot interviewer had a /facepalm moment when he commented to Chilton another studios president said at GDC 2010 that WoW as a franchise have become stalled ... to which Chilton responded with 11.5 million subscribers ... he has to disagree. I think what the interviewer meant is the subscription growth has stalled at 11.5 millions (aka it's not grown beyond that mark in a while).

Chilton denies any foreseeable future plans for World of Warcraft free gameplay model.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Won’t Support PowerPC Macs
Posted 27th Aug 2010 07:25 AM by Medievaldragon

Jessicalu, from the Blizzard Mac Support forum announced the patch near release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will render PowerPC-based Apple Mac computers unable to play the game as Blizzard will no longer support it.

Don't think you can fool this by not buying Cataclysm. The patch itself will be applied to all players whether they have only classic, Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King only installed.

Blizzard Quote:
A little forewarning to those of you that play World of Warcraft on these systems;

Shortly before the release of Cataclysm, a patch will be released in which PowerPC processor based Macs will no longer be supported.

This update indicates the removal of PowerPC support from World of Warcraft.

Attempting to run the game after the update will bring up a message stating the hardware is no longer supported, and the game will not run.

Cataclysm: The Redesign of Azshara
Posted 25th Aug 2010 06:08 PM by Medievaldragon

Blizzard Entertainment posted an in-house interview with game designers Craig Amai and Dave Kosak who talk about the drastic changes in the region Azshara. Believe me --- it's complete new region with elevated roads all around the place. The goblins dynamited the cliffs to shape up Azshara as a giant Horde symbol.

Blizzard Quote:
Delve into the mysteries of Azshara with game designers Craig Amai and Dave Kosak, who talked with us about the Horde's northward expansion and the rise of the Bilgewater Cartel as part of our ongoing coverage of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Adventure, conflict, and, of course, profit await those who enter the newly re-imagined Azshara!

What was the original concept for the zone?

Azshara has always been somewhat barren in terms of content, so our original plan was simply to fill in most of the unused space and then take some of the quests that spanned multiple zones and move them completely over to Azshara. The zone itself was a bit of a blank slate, so this approach seemed obvious from the very beginning.

While discussing our goals for the overall flow for Kalimdor, we started to heavily consider when, where, and how goblins would be introduced to questing on the continent. We realized that we were in sort of a dilemma because, at that point, four out of six Horde races were being routed through the same 10–20 leveling experience in the Northern Barrens. It was only then that we decided to retrofit Azshara as an alternative zone for level 10 through 20 Horde characters and make it a goblin hub.

Naturally, once goblins got involved, things sort of exploded.

Who will be using this zone (what levels/factions)?

Azshara is designed for level 10 through 20 Horde characters. Goblins will be encouraged to level in this particular zone because it expands on their story and sheds some additional light on already established characters. Orcs, trolls, and tauren will be able to choose between Azshara and the Northern Barrens, based on their personal preference. (Hint: Pick Azshara!)

Without giving up any spoilers, what's the general storyline for this zone? How has it changed from the original design?

Having recently gained the mantle of warchief, Garrosh Hellscream is preparing for war to claim all of Kalimdor for the Horde. The goblins of the Bilgewater Cartel, headquartered in Bilgewater Harbor, are playing their part by building war machines, constructing weapons, and establishing a massive naval harbor within sight of Orgrimmar. Meanwhile, the night elves aren't content to sit idly by; they fully intend to challenge this unwelcome occupation in Azshara and hopefully stymie a conflict that would otherwise be carried deep into their forests.

Amid all this tension, the Bilgewater Cartel is also out to make a name for itself in true goblin fashion. What is the best way to show solidarity? Reshape the Bay of Storms into a giant Horde symbol! From there, a secret lab, an extensive rocketway, and a "pleasure palace" with its own golf course are just natural leaps in goblin logic.

Overall, players will find that very little remains of the Azshara of old. The Hydraxian Warlords have departed. Azuregos is missing. Xylem's tower still stands, but Xylem himself seems to have stumbled upon something that has quickly driven him insane. And while clumsy explorers continue to be eaten by the local giant-life, the goblins have developed a method to make such an unfortunate circumstance practical and, yes, profitable.

How has Orgrimmar's relentless expansion altered the lands of Azshara?

Orgrimmar now has a massive gate leading north into Azshara, and the canyon that winds into this gate will give players a brief look at the war machines being wrought from goblin ingenuity and technology. The rest of the zone expands further on this promise of destruction. The middle of Azshara includes the new Bilgewater Harbor, which acts as a naval port for the entire Orgrimmar fleet, launching boats and zeppelins to carry out Garrosh's vision for the future of Kalimdor and beyond.

What have the goblins of the Bilgewater Cartel, now aligned with the Horde, done to reshape Azshara in their (or Trade Prince Gallywix's) image?

A quick glance at recent cartographical surveys of the region will show that the goblin commitment to the Horde cause is strong. Azshara is now the largest terraforming project on Azeroth! Whether it's sculpting the terrain to promote Horde propaganda, moving an entire mountain to pillage the minerals underneath, or slapping the face of the trade prince on a nearby crag, there's no question who wears the pants in Azshara these days.

What do you think is the most exciting new addition to the zone?

Well, there are super-intelligent raptors, a haunted bulldozer, a crack squad of goblin commandos, a hunt for Azuregos, an insane mage with countless apprentices, rat riding, parachuting from an exploding tower...

What if we just say that the most exciting new addition to Azshara is the entire zone?

You mentioned earlier that Azuregos is missing, but now he's being hunted. What's going on there?

Strangely, Azuregos has disappeared, and no one seems to know where he flew off to. After that last group of bloodthirsty adventurers came through on some sort of quest to make a now-useless quiver, he's just been... well, he's gone, and there have been whisperings of someone in Bilgewater Harbor who will pay handsomely for information on his whereabouts.

What goes into redesigning a zone like this?

We wanted to maintain the original color palette and fall-foliage theme for Azshara, but beyond that, it was a complete rework from the ground up. Artists began the process by creating some incredible landmarks, including a giant cannon centerpiece for the new city and an entire "pleasure palace" complete with the goblin equivalent of Mount Rushmore, which just oozed goblin flavor. Level designers then reshaped the environment, literally moving mountains, parting waters, and erecting a colossal, zone-encompassing rocket freeway. We then worked to complement the new scenery by adding a bizarre array of quests befitting the unique and crazy capitalistic culture of the Bilgewater Cartel.

What was the most challenging aspect about implementing all of these changes?

Not using our new terrain phasing technology to blow up everything. Self-restraint doesn't come easy.

What should players do or go see first?

Players should ideally start at the beginning, near the rear gate of Orgrimmar, and then follow the quest series from there; it'll lead you on a nice, smooth ride of awesome. Or, if you're the impatient type, head straight to Bilgewater Harbor, take a stroll through town, and grab some lunch at the local crustacean shack.

So, last question. Bilgewater Harbor: great port town or the greatest port town?

From its roots as a humble "city-in-a-box" to the bustling metropolis it is today, Bilgewater Harbor straddles the line between myth and legend. At least, that's what the brochure says.

The orc commanders might argue differently, though. It isn't exactly easy to maintain discipline in an otherwise lawless city where every vice you can imagine is available for just a handful of silver and debauchery is half off.

Thank you, Craig and Dave, for taking the time to sit down and speak with us about the work you've done to revitalize Azshara as an epic leveling zone in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

Bruce Campbell Looks Forward to Warcraft Film Role
Posted 24th Aug 2010 07:13 PM by Medievaldragon

MTV interviewed Bruce Campbell to discuss the upcoming launch of the 30th Anniversary remastering on Blu-Ray of "The Evil Dead".

One question deals with his apparent interest in the World of Warcraft film by Sam Raimi. Bruce Campbell claims it is possible and wraps it up with a joke.

Actually, that's how their phone calls sound. Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi have been pals for decades. At this point they talk like family ... triggering a few censor filters. [beep]

MTV News: As far as Sam goes, I know he's working on 'Warcraft' and 'Oz, The Great and Powerful.' Have you spoken to him, any chance we'll see you in those?

Bruce Campbell: I'm sure it's possible. But Sam's got so many things up in the air that I just wait until something settles. Then I'll give him an obnoxious phone message saying 'Come on, where's my part jerk?' and then hang up.

2010 GamesCom Interview: Gamona and Tom Chilton on Cataclysm
Posted 24th Aug 2010 05:55 PM by Medievaldragon

Our sister site Gamona.de interviewed World of Warcraft Game Director Tom Chilton live on video at 2010 GamesCom to discuss details of the Cataclysm expansion. The video interview is 15 minutes long, and Chilton responded questions gathered by Gamona.de from the community.

The developers are still iterating the Hunter and Paladin classes which have a new resource type no longer using mana. The Hunter uses focus and the Paladin uses holy power. Chilton thinks they need at least two months to finally finish polishing them.

Tol Barad is currently being tested as a 50 vs 50 players battleground, but they are still trying to determine if they can support more players in the zone. It's not final. He discusses Guild Achievements and solo players, phase technology, and data protection. The interview is in english with german sub-titles.

Thanks, noobie

Blizzard Announces Wrath of the Lich King launch in China
Posted 24th Aug 2010 05:04 PM by Medievaldragon

The long soap-opera between the Ministry of Culture of China and GAPP has come to an end, and NetEase readies up to launch the Wrath of the Lich King expansion in a few days on August 31.

Blizzard Entertainment deployed a press release to announce the launch of the expansion in Mainland China.

Blizzard Quote:
WORLD OF WARCRAFT®: WRATH OF THE LICH KING™ TO LAUNCH IN MAINLAND CHINA ON AUGUST 31, 2010

SHANGHAI, CHINA -- August 24, 2010 – Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and NetEase.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTES) today announced that World of Warcraft®: Wrath of the Lich King™, the second expansion for Blizzard Entertainment's award-winning subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), will launch in mainland China on August 31, 2010.

"We appreciate the continued passion and support that Chinese players have shown for World of Warcraft, and we're working hard to ensure that they have a topnotch gaming experience when Wrath of the Lich King is released," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "This expansion contains some of the best content we've ever created for the game, and we're excited that Chinese players will soon have a chance to explore everything it has to offer."

"World of Warcraft is one of the most popular online games among Chinese players, and we believe that the new content in Wrath of the Lich King will generate even more excitement," said William Ding, CEO of NetEase. "We are fully prepared on all fronts to provide great service and support to all of the new and returning players throughout China, and we look forward to welcoming them to Northrend."

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King sends players to the cold, forbidding continent of Northrend, where the fearsome Lich King Arthas Menethil, last seen in Warcraft® III: The Frozen Throne®, works from his secluded citadel to bring all of Azeroth under his twisted dominion. Players will battle the Lich King's army from the shores of Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra to the seat of his power in Icecrown. In addition, players will be able to advance characters to level 80 and gain powerful new abilities while exploring several new zones and dungeons. The expansion also introduces a number of exciting new features, including expanded player-vs.-player combat options such as siege weapons and destructible buildings, as well as the game's first Hero class -- the death knight.

Since launching in November 2004, World of Warcraft has become the world's most popular MMORPG, with a current global player base of more than 11.5 million subscribers. For more information on World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, visit the official website at http://www.warcraftchina.com.

World of Warcraft: Stormrage Back to Printing
Posted 24th Aug 2010 03:52 PM by Medievaldragon

After six years of hiatus, trapped within the Nightmare, Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage is back to business in Azeroth. Your first sighting of him will be at the center of the tornado of Darkshore, and lastly in Mount Hyjal.

But ... when and how did he return from the Emerald Nightmare? Many fans who don't read the novels will have this self-question in their minds when they see Malfurion and don't find any quest explaining his return.

All your questions are revealed in World of Warcraft: Stormrage -- the three-time Locus Magazine Bestseller by New York Times Bestseller author Richard A. Knaak. It was released back on February 2010.

Couldn't find the novel online or at a local bookstore? Try again. World of Warcraft: Stormrage went for another round at printing, and is available again.

Richard A. Knaak opened an Amazon store with all his Blizzard novels and Dragonrealm work.

If you missed them, he recently wrote two TOKYOPOP mangas -- World of Warcraft: Mage and World of Warcraft: Shadow Wing, Dragons of Outland Vol. 1.

Update: World of Warcraft: Stormrage paperback is scheduled for November 2010.
