Duels
From wow.incgamers.com
A Duel is a friendly closed PvP combat between two combatants, which will not end in one player's death, unless a game bug or other player/mob interferes. You can duel a player of your faction as well as players of the opposite faction, which is a great way to test your mettle against opposing faction players without killing your opponent, or be killed. If you want to be able to fight larger battles, you all need to be in a World Arena, or sign up in The Arena system.

How to start a Duel
You start a duel by selecting a player and right-clicking on their portrait and choosing "Duel". You can also select a person and type "/duel" in the chat window, or write "/duel Player" without selecting a player.
When you have challenged another player to a Duel, a battle flag will appear between you, and the duel will begin if the challenged player accepts the Duel. You are unable to attack players of your own faction unless they accept the challenge. If the challenged player accepts the duel, a countdown will start with sound and numbers in your chat log. It counts down from 3, and then the duel starts, and your opponent's name turn red with a sound.
Fighting in a duel
As soon as your opponent turns red, you can hit him or cast spells at him. The fight is on. For "ranged" classes like Hunters and Mages, it is preferable to start far away from your opponent, while Warriors and Paladins prefer to start close. You have the first 3 seconds to try and position yourself as well as possible before the duel starts.
Duellists who want to keep a distance to their target need to be sure not to run too far from the flag, as if you move too far away from it, you risk forfeiting. A box on the screen saying "Exiting duel area, you will forfeit in 10 seconds", that counts down to 0. If you are still outside the duel area when the counter hits 0, you have forfeited the duel and the message: "Player 1 has fled from Player 2 in a duel" will be broadcast to the region.
You win when the opposing player reaches 1 hit point, or would have gone under it from your damage, and you loose if the same happens to you. You or your opponent should not be killed, unless you experience some bug, or interference from other players or mobs. The result of the duel will be broadcast to the region in the same way as if you forfeit like this: "Player 1 has defeated Player 2 in a duel". The looser also kneels before the winner.
Why Duel?
As you will not gain anything from duelling in terms of the game, the reasons for duelling are more related to yourself as a player.
- Try your skill against other players.
- Try out new spells or items to see how they work.
- Friendly fights against players of the other faction.
- Duel people with a bet of gold in the pot (not automatic).
- When you win your first duel, you gain the Achievement "Duel-icious".
Duel Tips
- Some players will move sideways in order to try and face your back to make you unable to hit them or cast spells. This is called "strafing" and you'll have to learn how to run and rotate to combat this technique.
- Players have different opinions about what could be "cheating" in a duel (potions, scrolls, sharpening stones, etc). Make sure to agree on rules before the duel starts.
- During a duel your allies should not help you, such as healing you.
- You shouldn't have other buffs than you can cast on yourself, unless the opponent also get a similar buff.
- It is polite to heal your opponent before yourself after the duel, if you are a healing capable class and have mana left.
- First Aid is a must for every player who likes PvP and duelling.
- If duelling a player of the opposite faction on a PvE server in a contested zone, be careful of the opponent switching on the PvP flag during the duel, as hitting him will make you PvP-flag-enabled. When this happens, you are attackable by anyone in his faction who may have been waiting for a chance to gank you.
- If duelling a player on a PvP server in a contested zone, there is a chance players of the other faction comes by and kills you or your opponent for Honor Points.
