Gilneas
From wow.incgamers.com
Gilneas is the country on the western most peninsula on the Lordaeron continent of the Eastern Kingdoms. They are fiercly independent and have refused to join the Alliance. The kingdom closed their borders at the start of the Third War, and no word on what is going on inside has been uttered since.Contents |
Second War
During the Second War, Gilneas barely supported the Alliance. Lord Genn Greymane joined the Alliance merely because the Horde had invaded Zul'Dare, an isle near Gilneas, and felt threatened.
Once the war was over, Lord Genn Greymane refused King Terenas and the Alliance's decision to raise taxes to maintain the Orc Internment Camps. Gilneas's resources wouldn't be used to such ends. Lord Genn Greymane would rather see the orcs slain. Thus he retreated Gilneas' participation in the Alliance, and ordered the construction of the Greymane Wall to separate and isolate his state from the other nations and any intrusion.
Gilneas is located in a peninsula isolated from sea access by high cliffs and a coral bank so dense around its coastline that no invasion via sea was possible. The only means to enter Gilneas was by land, and that was blocked by the Greymane Wall. However, that changed after the Cataclysm in the third World of Warcraft expansion.
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft launched on November 2004. Early Forsaken quests lead you to the Greymane Wall, where refugees escaping the Scourge sought shelter in Gilneas. However, the Greymane Wall remained closed.
The area was roamed by strange creatures known as the Worgen, summoned there by Archmage Arugal.
Cataclysm
The Worgen curse spread through Gilneas affecting various humans. The citizens of Gilneas raged a civil war. Gilneans fought Worgen-converted Gilneans. Finally, Lord Genn Greymane's royal chemist Krennas Aranas found a way to contain the threat.
Krennas deviced a dosage made of Mandrake essense that allowed the Worgen-converted Gilneans to regain their human mind afloat over their worgen-wild animal mind. Though they are able to revert back to human form at will -- intense anger, pain or fear will trigger a physical transformation into Worgen. Yet their human mind allows them to control their actions to help their fellow human Gilneans.
The Cataclysm caused the natural coral banks on the coastline to break in some areas allowing the Forsaken warships to sail onto the beach to lead an invasion into Gilneas. Prince Liam Greymane and the worgen succeded and held back the invasion.
The Night Elves will assist the Worgen and bring them back into the Alliance. The new friends of Gilneas offered a way to pacify their bestial form by teaching the ways of druidism.
