What is Tailoring?

Introduction

Tailoring is the skill in which you use needle, thread and cloth to make clothes and equipment made of fabric (as well as a few minor things involving leather). Tailoring is not often thought of as a "cool" profession, as no one wants to think of wearing a pink dress when you can dual-wield massive axes, Engineer really cool robots, or make the finest Jewelry. No, the Tailor gets the shaft.

Here's the deal though, the tailor has some of the most sought after items in the game. First off, he provides the coolest clothes for cloth wearers such as Mages, Priests, Warlocks as well as other classes who use cloth for specificly spell casting or healing (as cloth equipment often have the best stats for that). Second in line for the competition are the bags that Tailors can make, like an Herbalism, Enchanting or Soul Bag? In addition to this, a highly skilled Tailor can make special magic fabric that others uses, and can sell these for quite a profit.

As someone with the Tailoring Profession does not need a gathering profession, you are also free to pick Herbalism or Mining just to get of extra cash on the Auction House, or perhaps Enchanting to enchant your newly created equipment. In a way, it is the Profession with the easiest time to get materials for the bulk of their crafts.

Type of Profession

  • Tailoring is a Primary Profession, and therefore counts towards your 2 Primary Professions Limit.
  • Tailoring is a Crafting Profession, it is not used for Gathering materials for other Professions.

How to Become a Tailorer?

You can train to five levels of proficiency (four if you don't have the Burning Crusade expansion) and each has certain prerequisites that you need to meet before you are able to progress to the next rank of proficiency. You need to be character level five or above to begin your training in a Profession. Below is a list of locations with links to maps which pinpoint exactly where the Trainer can be found.

What are the Tailoring Specializations?

With the Burning Crusade expansion, Tailors above level 60 and Tailoring skill 350 have gotten the oppurtunity to specialise in their Profession further than what they could before. The Categories are:

  • Mooncloth Tailoring
  • Shadoweave Tailoring
  • Spellfire Tailoring

All of the specialisations will make your character able to produce twice the amount of cloth of the specialisation type per cooldown on your skill, as well as opens up a few new Tailoring Recipies that you can only make for yourself (Bind on Pickup). These Tailoring recipies are very powerful, and having twice of the cloth per day is a huge boost, as the price for these cloths are very high.

Mooncloth Tailoring will make your [Unknown Item: Primal Mooncloth] transmutes twice as effective (recive 2 instead of 1 when transmuting). The "Self-only" equipment you receive through the Specialization is primarily for healing gear, with healing and mana regeneration bonuses (the Primal Mooncloth Set that includes [Unknown Item: Primal Mooncloth Belt], [Unknown Item: Primal Mooncloth Robe] and [Unknown Item: Primal Mooncloth Shoulders]). The only difficulty with this Specialization is that you must have easy access to a Moonwell, which may be a bit inconvenient, especially for Horde players.

Spellfire Tailoring will make your [Unknown Item: Spellcloth] transmutes twice as effective (recive 2 instead of 1 when transmuting). The "Self-only" equipment you receive through the Specialization is great for casters that love their fire and arcane damage, as this gear has full of bonuses for it (the Wrath of Spellfire set that includes [Unknown Item: Spellfire Belt], [Unknown Item: Spellfire Gloves] and [Unknown Item: Spellfire Robe]).

Shadoweave Tailoring will make your [Unknown Item: Shadowcloth] transmutes twice as effective (recive 2 instead of 1 when transmuting). The "Self-only" equipment you receive through the Specialization is the way to go if you like your shadow and frost damage, because the specialisation gets you +shadow and +frost (the Shadow's Embrace set that includes [Unknown Item: Frozen Shadoweave Boots], [Unknown Item: Frozen Shadoweave Robe] and [Unknown Item: Frozen Shadoweave Shoulders]).

How do I Train in One of These Specializations?

In order to specialise you must have 350 or higher skill levels in Tailoring and be lvl 60.

For both Horde and Alliance, you go to the eastern part Shattrath's Lower City, and speak to (for Shadoweave), (Spellfire) or (Mooncloth) depending on what specialisation you are interested in. The one you choose will start you on a quest to specialise in one of the Tailoring Schools.

How to Change Profession or Unlearn it?

If you ever grow tired of your choosen Profession, you can rather easily change the Profession to something else. This can be done either through changing Profession Specialization, or comletely unlearn it, starting again from scratch.

Changing Specialisation

Tailoring is one of the Professions with Specialization, and a Tailor can change between the three Specializations without having to relearn Tailoring from the beginning every time.

You do this by visiting the NPC you learned your current specialisation from in the eastern Lower City of Shattrath City (see above for further help). It will cost 150 gold to unlearn the current specialisation and another 20 gold to learn a new one. Please be aware of the fact that unlearning a specialisation will disable your ability to use the items crafted with that Tailoring school.

Changing or Unlearning Profession

Unlearn this profession
If you want to completely unlearn your profession, it is easy, and can be done for free any number of times. All you need to do is to open your Skills panel (press K), click on the Profession you want to permanently unlearn. A small icon will appear next to it and clicking on this will unlearn the skill. Be aware of the fact that you will lose all associated recipes and support skills, and will have to start the new Profession up from start. If you accidently deleted your Profession, you will have to start it up from the beginning again, buying all skills and recipies. Be very careful to make no mistakes here, as Blizzard will probably not help you undo the unlearning.

Please observer that you don't need to unlearn a Profession to change Specialization.

Crafting

While it is good to have all the information needed on how and where to learn a profession, it is also important to know about how to use it!

How Do I Get Supplies?

As mentioned above, Tailoring does not require a Gathering Profession, and is therefore more flexible in finding supplies to create items. Tailors use Cloth that drops from Humanoid and Undead enemies in the game, and can be found across Azeroth and Outland, which they turn into Bolts, and in turn use to create beautiful or practical (or both!) outfits.

  • Get Cloth by killing Humanoid and Undead enemies.
  • Make the Cloth into Bolts with your Tailoring skills.
  • Some components are bought from a Tailoring Supplier (see below).
  • Some components can be traded from a player with the Blacksmithing Profession.
  • Some components can be traded from a player with the Enchanting Profession.
  • Some components can be traded from a player with the Leatherworking Profession.
  • Some components can be traded from a player with the Skinning Profession.
  • Most of the things you might need from other players can usually be bought at your local Auction House, or perhaps your guild.

How Do I Make Items?

Once you have learnt your first (Apprentice) level of Tailoring you will find the icon on the right in your Skills & Abilities book (hotkey P) which when clicked on will open your Tailoring Pattern book. To become the ultimate Tailor you will need to obtain patterns from a Trainer, find them from quests, killing monsters or trading them with other players.

If you have all the required ingredients to create the item you will not fail (as is the case in some other games). However, depending on the level of the pattern, you may or may not increase a skill level in Tailoring. Your skill can only increase if you work on patterns that show as green, yellow or orange in your pattern book. If you work on any of the trivial recipes (grey ones) they will never make you gain skill.

Depending on what color a pattern shos as in your book, they will be one of four different colours which indicate the likelihood of gaining skill when creating it:

  • Grey = You will not receive a skill point when creating.
  • Green = You will rarely gain a skill point when creating.
  • Yellow = You will probably gain a skill point when creating.
  • Orange = You will always gain a skill point in when creating.
  • Red = You do not have high enough skill level learn this pattern.

The Tailoring pattern book also displays what items your current ingredients can be used for and for how many of each you can make. If you select an item, the book will tell you exactly what reagents are needed to create it.

If any of the reagents icons are greyed out it's because you do not have any of them. If you have all the reagents simply click "create" and it will automatically create the item and move it to your backpack. Threads and dyes can be purchased from a Tailoring Supplier.

How Do I Learn More Patterns?

Having trained as an Apprentice Tailor you start with just a few recipes in your Pattern Book ready to start producing (if you have materials). If you want to aquire more difficult patterns, you have to make more items from your Profession to gain skill, and be able to purchase more skills from the trainer.

As your skill increases, more recipes will become available to learn at an Tailoring Trainer. If you go back to a town there's more than likely a trainer there who will teach you recipes in return for money. Some patterns can be awarded after completing a quest, dropped by monsters or for sale at a regular vendor. If you find a pattern scroll, you can just double click on it to learn it (unless it has a too high skill requirement). If you've already learned that recipe it will say "Already Known" and you can trade the scroll with another player or a vendor.

At a certain point, it is no longer possible to learn more from the Profession Trainer, and you have to either find your own patterns, or trade/buy them from other players. These have different quality, and you can see that by looking at the icon color:

  • Grey - Trivial, can be bought from a vendor, don't overpay a player to buy it from him or the Auction House! Will have a white nametag.
  • Green - Uncommon, can't be bought from a vendor, but is still pretty common, and you can probably find them cheap. Will have a green nametag.
  • Yellow - Rare, can sometimes be worth a good bit more than the "uncommon" quality patterns. Will have a blue nametag.
  • Orange - Epic, very rare patterns that can be worth hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of gold. Very rare. Will have a purple nametag.

How Do I Gain Skill?

In many cases, when you create items just to "skill up" the Profession, you will often end up with many items of the same type. As many other players do the same, there is no chance you can actually sell this item to someone else. Especially in the beginning, it is probably best to just sell these to a "vendor" (an NPC character selling and buying things). When you start to make more uncommon item, it might be a good idea to ask an Enchanter to disenchant them, so you at least get some Enchanting materials, which have a higher chance of selling, or someone needing. If possible, try to sell or trade with a player, since vendors pay very poorly for items.

Whilst making your items you can still do certain things that does not involve moving your character from the spot he is at. You could organise your inventory, assign talent points or chat. Each item only takes a few seconds to produce but if you're creating a whole bunch you can at least occupy yourself whilst that's being done. If you are attacked or move, you will be interrupted (but not loose any items). You can't create anything whilst riding or flying either.

Mana Looms

Really high level Tailors need a Mana Loom to create their special magical cloth, as they are significantly more complex to make than your average shirt. This works about the same as a Forge for a Miner or an Anvil for a Blacksmith. Unfortunately, there is only one Mana Loom, you can find it next to the NPCs that help you to specialise Tailoring, , or .

What Items Can I Create?

As with all Professions, there is many things you can create with Tailoring. The prominent ones, such as the Specialization sets, bags and expensive cloth is just a few. There is also "flavour" items such as the Tuxedo Suit, Shirts and many items that others have use for as well.

What Can I Make That Other Professions Need?

Making items that other professions require to do their own crafting can be a good way to make some cash on the side. You can of course sell your other items, but if you're the best source of a reagent that stands in the way of another player making an item with their profession you can probably make some cash from it. The article below lists all the things a Tailor can make that fall into this category. Also listed are any items required for the completion of a quest, another possible income revenue.

Anything Else

  • Character Levels - As with nearly everything in World of Warcraft cloth items come with a minimum character level requirement. For example, the [Unknown Item: Blue Overalls] can only be used by characters level 15 or above.
  • Cool Downs - There is a "cool down" period for most skills and spells and that applies to Tailors too. That is the period of time between one skill being used and another being ready. This can vary between skills or items. The making of [Unknown Item: Primal Mooncloth], [Unknown Item: Spellcloth] or [Unknown Item: Shadowcloth] have 22 hours for example, and they share that cooldown, so you can not make one of each during the same time. Items of Tailoring can sometimes have a "Use" feature, and in most cases, they also have a cooldown (but then around 5-30 minutes), which is not the same as "duration"!
  • Soulbound - In a way to avoid total inflation of the game's economy, most items in the game are either "Bind on Pickup" (BoP) or "Bind on Equip" (BoE). Most of the crafted items are "BoE", and when you have put it on to you once, you can no longer give or sell that item to another player, only vendors will be able to purchase it from you.
  • Besides Bags and Clothes - Tailoring is for the most part about making regular items, but they can also make Spellthread to amplify casters potential in their quests. All you need to do is right clock on the Spellthread, and then attach it to your leggings.
