The Death Knight is a new Class, available in the upcoming expansion Wrath of the Lich King. This new class will be the first playable Hero Class in World of Warcraft.

Death Knights will use different combinations of Runes on their weapons to make use of certain spells. There are three types of Rune; Blood, Unholy and Frost.

The first Death Knight in Warcraft lore war was Arthas Menethil, son of King Terenas Menethil, and now the Lich King, whom players will fight in Wrath of the Lich King.

Players will have access to a Death Knight once they have a level 55+ character on their account. Once they have achieved this, they gain the ability to create a Death Knight while retaining their old character. The Death Knight will start at level 55 in a dedicated new area in the Eastern Plaguelands.
